i've read his two most famous book, on the road and dharma bums. i thought they were both great books. so the question is, which one of his books to read next? i like the two main themes of travelling and philosophy, and would like to read another one that has similar themes to one, or both of those books.

recommendations?

"Dharma Bums" is shite--I mean ABSOLUTE FUCKING TRASH. It's akin to "The Celestine Prophecy" in its infantile depiction of the world. Fucking utter fantasy and bad writing to boot.

"On the Road" is a bit more tolerable, but, still, nothing spectacular.

"Big Sur" is the only Kerouac book that I actually enjoyed reading.

Go for some Burroughs if you want that Beat Lit flavor. But, Burroughs isn't really that Beat Lit--he's just Burroughs. So, I guess what I'm saying is: Beat Lit feltches the assholes of sows after a misguided fornication attempt.

Uncalled for  Some people, myself included find this book romantic and inspiring...

I'm a huge Naked Lunch fan but, Burroughs's The Yage Letters REDUX was nothing more than one or two good trip reports with 120 pages on how to score junk and young boys in the jungle.

Ken Kesey's Sometimes a Great Notion is one of my favourite late beat genra books.

My big problem with Kerouac was his obsession with the "other"..he was so obsessed with being the white poor kid and sometimes it just seems like he really wishes he was black or latino or anything but what he is, cause that'd be "cool, man." Fuck - I hate On the Road.

All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.

I made the mistake of reading Dharma Bums first.

Now i'm trying to get through On The Road, and I can't.

Infantile depiction? Please elaborate. I thought he was just trying to be an honest, nice guy, but I can definitely see why you don't like him. He gets a little too...into his spirituality?

I tried to read Naked Lunch but that shit is way too confusing.

didn't you just make a post a while back about how everyone should read On The Road and how great it was? I think it was on the 50th anniversary of its publication or something.
