help with my new salvia

I need some help with my new salvia, its a cutting my buddy made for me and broght to me, it is a beutiful cutting



he said it was already putting out roots, and it feels pretty firm in the ground, but the base of the stem it starting to suck in a little and turn brown. Im worried im gonna kill it. What kind of watering schedule should i put it on? Ive been misting it once or twice a day, and watering the pot at least every other day, too much? Here are a couple more pics for better referance



also, the leaves that came on it (i think he cut the big ones off for more plant resources used to root, but idk) are starting to brown on the edges and become brittle here is a pic




any help is appreciated

It'll be fine, just keep misting it and dont take anymore leaves off it. Water it when the ground is dry at the top, don't over water it.

Hey supra,

The cutting looks like it is doing quite well. On the contrary to most advice I do not regularly mist my salvia. It sounds logical that misting would increase the relative humidity and help the overall well being of the plant. The fact of the matter is that misting provides temporary relief after which the plant is constantly in a struggle to correct the change in osmostic pressure. I recommend one of two options. Put the plant into a humidity tent where the RH is constantly high or do not use a humidity tent and let the plant maintain a constant osmostic pressure in low RH (no regular misting). I actually would recommend not to mist and screw the humidity tent. The cutting you got was perfectly fine in ambient RH. Something else I see, are those H. gordonii in that one photo? Beautiful succulents there. She is getting way too much sunlight in that window if you have hoodia growing there. That is mostly likely the reason for the browning leaves and the shrinking stem. You need to make sure she is getting either all indirect sunlight or you need to slowly acclimate her to direct sunlight. My sally get zero direct sunlight because my current residence does not allow the opportunity for direct sunlight. She'll grow to love that window but don't leave her there for more than an hour or two to start. If you want her growing there increase her light exposure by a half hour every couple days. Increasing the light slowly will allow her to grow a more expansive root system along with her increasing light exposure. Lastly, the soil mix I use seems to necessitate a drink once every three days. I use 3/5 orchid mix, 1/5 commercial potting soil(peat based), 1/5 perlite.

I defoliated that cutting of the larger shade leaves for two reasons:
1. I root cuttings in ambient RH indoors. The larger leaves will fall off anyways.
2. I root several cuttings in one container because of available space. I also rarely have problems with stem rot using the method described despite some internet advice I have read. Cuttings in which the large leaves are intact root much faster. I just do not have the space to root 20+ cuttings in separate containers.

I have had much success cultivating S. divinorum. Read as much as you can about cultivating her. Take any advice you read including mine with a grain of salt. Find something that works for her and stick with it. S. divinorum is a very forgiving hardy plant unless you have eight legs and piercing sucking mouth parts.

it is getting worse, the sunken in stem is now happening all the way to the tip, she is having a rough time, it is rooting, as the plant is firm in the pot, but all the leaves are almost dead now, just the original is left.

anything else i can do? HELP!!!!

Sorry it sounds like she's a goner, happens to the best of us sometimes. I suggest getting a 2-8" cutting next time and using minimal amounts of water with a humidity tent even if the clone came from an area of low RH.

i moved it out of the window like you were saying, and lightened up on the watering...thats about it, it stays room temp for it all day, and i have watered it twice since my original post.

Is the stem still some shade of green or has it turned black? Have you checked for creepy crawlies? I had to hose down all my salvia and kratom today because the spider mites were getting a little out of control. You might want to put her into a humidty tent/chamber of some sort. I use a plastic rubbermaid storage container turned on its short side. Mist the inside real good, give her a drink, and put her inside for a day or two and see if her stem fattens back up. If the stem is black almost all hope is lost unless you cut above the blackened stem and start rooting again. Out of the 25 cuttings I took from my mother I lost one. It was the crappiest cutting from the beginning.

no, it is not black, brown at some spots, but not black, should i make multiple cuttings right under each node and plant each in it own humidity tent maybe? I will put it in a bucket right now like you said man...thanks

Don't cut her yet. That will really set her back. You will know when to cut her. The stem will turn black and will be squishy to the touch then the whole cutting will fall over because of her own weight. If she is still standing upright a day or two in a humidity enclosure will help immensely.

I added below a photo of stem rot from my one dead cutting. You can clearly see the green healthy portion of the stem and the black squishy rotting portion below it.

no, its not squishy anywhere, just getting skinny, i think it should make it, it still feels firm, and is mostly green...definately doesnt look like that...
