Pan Subs found in Ohio?!
    #6137008 -

I found these yesterday in some grass in northern Ohio. The spore prints are BLACK! They're kind of dried up now, and they got really small, but before that they looked like most "little brown mushrooms" that I've found. The stems are thin and white, getting a little darker towards the cap, which is brown to tan. On a few of them there's a subtle pinkish color around the edge of the cap. The gills are darkish brown.
Are these subs??

there are plenty of mushrooms with black spore prints...

subs generally have a reddish stem on them, and the cap will have a dark ring along the outer part of the cap...

The hygrophanous nature of P. subbalteatus can lead to complete fading of the zone feature leaving the mushroom a uniformly consistent fawn like color.
You can sacrifice a light colored specimen by placing it in a small bowl of water to see if the zones come back… saturate the mushroom, then remove it from the water and the rings can sometimes be seen as the mushroom loses moisture. I wouldn’t use this as a technique for identification as many LBMs are hygrophanous however it can be fun to do and give one a better understanding of their appearance.

didn't know that... sounds like a cool technique, but way too involved for some pan subbs...
