how long to wait for the pan subs?

Hey all you westcoasters out there! When are you guys expectin for these gosh darn mushrooms to start poppin up? I am in washington state and have been waiting for this time ever since the last find of cyans on New years eve, (hehe what a fun new years)

Oj, i am no expert on spring mushies but things on the westside are pretty warm right now. If this keeps up and you dont see much more frost on the ground in the mornings and it keeps staying then i would imagine the subs could be popping this week or next. I just read MJ pan sub article but i cant remember what the fruiting temp range for them is, i would image about the 50 degree range? Correct me if i am wrong here.

Oh yea and OJ i never made it up to bham this weekend but i have bags and bags of stunzii kickin it so keep on me about it and you will have them soon enough. Also OJ. you should make a huge effort to find some spring stunzii up in whatcom county, i have never found any stunzii in bham and me and Azurescen decided last fall that they just dont grow in bham but that seems absurd. So basically if you find some stunzii up there and post some pics you will be a pimp in my book. If we dont find any stunzii up there by the end of the fall this year i think someone will have to take it apon themselves to transplant some mycelium up there and start a stunzii patch so they can spread about. Maybe the cyans just overpower the little stunzii, we both know that the cyans are VERY abundant in bham, muwahahah. Ironic thing is that 3 years ago i didnt even think cyans sprouted up in bham. Those were the days when i was an exclusive semilanceata hunter.

Rawk that was a huge ass post, going back to school and taking some mycology courses has raised my interest.

Cardboard what luck you have, I saw your pics last fall and I'm so jealous. I just moved up to bham this last year and have had no luck. Feel like helping out a fellow hunter? ... maybe we could help spread some strains =)

yah cardboard, its all good man!

I will have my car soon, so I will be searching left and right for stuntzii come season!  If i find some i will make sure to take pictures for your viewing pleasure, maybe I can pick enough to hit you back sometime when you run out of mushrooms..

I think its cool how your so generous with your findings and will freely share with me, I've never even seen stuntzii let alone try them, can't wait.

EMM: PM me, and I wouldnt mind taking you out hunting sometime, even though I am far from an MJ, Cardboard, Levi, or Azure :smile:...  I found my fair share of cyans last fall, and you would be amazed on how easy it is to find these specimen...  Hopefully this spring brings up some magic cuase my pounds and pounds of cyans are LONG gone!!!

Next year I am going to hit up some liberty caps, along with cyans, and you are welcome to come with me anytime EMM because I know just how frusterating it can be to look and look for magic and none appears to be present  :frown:

All three of us live in a great place to pick magic mushrooms and I am definatly not going to be greedy and hide my spots from fellow shroomeritees, as long as you dont mess up the mycelium...

If you would like to transplant some stuntzii in Bellingham let me know so i can keep my eyes on your patch.....  :smile:
If you have enough maybee you would be so kind to pick me up a bag of mycelium  =]

Now as far as the subbs go, I'm not really sure about the PNW strain of subbs, but around here in the southeast they don't start until we have highs in the 70's, they aren't really cool weather mushrooms like everyone thinks. They are about the same as cubes, they both stop fruiting around the same time here in GA. Actually I'd say that cubes are more hardy than pans subbs and will fruit in lower temps than the pans. They should be up and fruiting by late march, early april unless we get some freak warm spells and lots of rain.

Yeah, most books say they fruit June-July and for a short time in early fall. Dunno, though, because last February or early March(can't remember), I was trying to get ahold of MJ to visit Tumwater and pick them. I'm pretty sure MJ wouldn't go looking if he didn't know for a fact they were there.
I have no idea about these though. I'm gonna in a few weeks and see what I come up with.
I agree that they're not cold weather species. It seems like their boring cousins always come around end of May or so.
So I'm just adding the part about MJ.
-OJ, when you get your car, you should go check that spot I gave you a long time ago. I'm sure you'll find Ps. Stuntzii there.
-I'd also like to add that well, mushroom season is not only in the fall. It begins when the temps rise in the new year and ends when the temps drop at the very end of the year. Every area has its "common" weather and there's always a chance that "freak" weather will happen. In this case, you never know what'll pop up! Coolest thing; one week in the middle of January in South Carolina, the temps went from highs in the low 40s to nearly 80 degrees for a 3 1/2 day period! It was awesome! Well, then a thunderstorm came and on the fourth day, back down to the 30s. I believe that's enough time for some species to fruit, if the mycelium hasn't went dormant.

Mj's article on the pan subs says that they go into season in the pac northwest as early as the end of February. It must be somewhat different strain than grows on the eastcoast. Around here we sit at about an daytime average of around 70 in the dead of summer, thats like as hot as it gets. If it gets into the 80s thats fucking hot for washington state. The only pan subs have ever picked i found in early fall, the temps were in the 50's.

Oj, i will see what i can pull up as far as stunzii spawn, if i can figure out a good way to incubate this shit and get it to grow rapidly i will definetly be in the patch distribution phase soon. I really should have had a bunch of bags of spawn growing in the garage throughout the winter but it took me awhile to find a good source of alder chips.

We should throw down a gathering of hunters of sorts this fall season. We tried last fall but it kinda failed. If we start now we should be able to organize something.

Hey I don't post on here often, but im from WA state (Bellevue) and that sounds like a great idea. I have never been hunting before, so I have no idea what I'm doing...but I have been reading up lately, and I think I can do it (hopefully without killing myself). There are a lot of wooded areas near my house...so I was wondering if I could find Liberty Caps in those areas, and what time could I expect to see them?

Well the Panaeolus subbalteatus which appeqr in haystacks in the PNW grow during and after the spring rains and again in the fall during the fallo rains.

They do not grow in the extrememly hot weather of June and July. in the PNW.


The ones in thje USA do not blue very much but tend to have blue tinges of fluffy white mycelia where they are attached to thestrands of the hay in the stack.. In Maui, they are very big, grow from manure and stain extremely blue with a silvery-grey stem color mixed with bluing similar to thsat of the Copelandia species.

The dosage is one ounce fresh or from three to five to six grams of dried. Very catrtoony in high dosages.

Andrew Weil reporting becoming nauseated on this species yet I think that was an individual problem.

I have consumed this species pon sseveral ocassions during the past twernty-five years with no bad experiences.

However, I have also found this shroom growing in soil with woodchips as early as January and February in Seattle at several locations on several different years of picking.

The picture on the id species of my shroom guide was photographed in January growing in woodchips and soil. In the PNW this mushroom also grows on manure but is rather scarce. I only found it once in a field in Kent/Aubuern region of Seattles subburbs..

Anyone have luck finding these delicious looking gems on Vancouver Island, around Victoria perhaps? I personally haven't seen any, but then again, haven't been looking for these Pan Subs.

The subject of Pan subbs is important right now, as it is a mushroom that is gonna flourish right now and almost everywhere in the U.S.A. for the months to come!
You see, this particular mushroom represents a common interest between Shroomerites all over the country and even the world! We can all go hunting for this magic mushroom and report back to this site daily! It just rocks!

Dwhahaha well i am almost sure (dont want to say positive at this point) that i scored a job at a nursery over here in eburg. This means nothing but goodtimes for finding wacky new easternwashington fungii on a daily basis.

I am betting that one of us will have found some pan subs within the next few weeks, especially with MJ giveaway spot. I am gonna be checking areas from bellevue north trough snohomish up through marysville on highway 9 then jumping across I-5 and down to warmbeach area to check my stunzii marine unit #4. This is the perfect mush hunting route and it just happens to be a fast way to get home from eburg.

Contrary to mj's reply to the season. Subalteatus grow very well in July in the northwest. Last year i picked from a single location over 2000 subbalteatus between july and august. If you can find a horse compost used for fertilizer around certain trees you may find cepitose growing large subs. My experiece with subbalteatus is they most difficult to digest compared to other psilocybes However, I have never become or felt sick. They are nice because they don't taste bad or bitter in my opioion. They are can be close to the same potency as cubes. The trip is different and subbalteatus contain more active compounds than any other tested psilocybe according to Jermey Bigwood.

Yeah, the taste of subbs. is a lot differnt than cubies, the ones I had last year had a very plant-like/minty taste to them, as compared to the Cubes which tasted like sour cardboard. I know what you're talking about as far as them being hard to digest... they gave me a mad case of the shits. Cubes were actualy harder on my stomach than the subbs.

Another spot that you would want to look: On piles of grass clippings, thats where I found all of mine last year... Along with about 5 other species of Pans.
