questions about substrate
    #613680 - 04/20/02 09:28 AM (21 years, 11 months ago)

i'm going to prepare my jars of substrate today, and i'm using the brown rice flower and vermiculite method. in the magic mushroom grower's guide it calls for 2/3 cup of verm., 1/4 cup of BRF, and 1/4 cup of water for every 1/2 pint jar. when i mix it up in a bowl it doesnt seem to me like the mixture is wet enough with only the 1/4 cup of water. does anyone use this method and are the amounts correct? it just seems really dry to me and when i put the dry vermiculite on top for the last 1/2 inch, i cant even distinguish the substate from the dry vermiculite on top. also there is always like a big pile of the mixture left after each time i prepare a jar. that got me confused but i guess i'll just keep putting the leftover into a bowl and get a couple of jars out of that. any info on whether he amounts in this method are correct would be apprecated

will work fine, try 1/2 verm 1/4 water 1/4 brown rice (cups) if you've got too much left over

Good luck

When you mix up the substrate, mix enough for each jar individually. I mean, mix just enough to fill one jar, then keep doing that for each jar. It will help make sure you have done it accurately.

Yes, I've had a tough time finding vermiculite in this area (Greater Cincinnati). I have tried several of the normal places; Walmart, K-mart, Home Depot, etc... Finally I was able to find it at Frank's Nursery. It's more fine than I have ever seen, but I assume it should work OK.

Also, I have a friend who works at a patio/hearth ratail store. According to him, they also sell it for use in gas log applications. I have no idea how or why, but it's good to know they have it if I'm in a pinch. Although at an inflated price.

No verm at Wal-mart in my neck o' the woods either. The stuff I found at Frank's was a little too chunky for my liking. Menard's has it seasonally, and just started stocking it again. You can usually find it at those cute li'l suburban mom and pop garden centers, too.

yeah i've been having troube finding it as well. Finally i asked someone at Home depot what the deal was. He told me that they didn't carry it any more because they found out it was toxic! He said that they are changing some ingredents but they should re-release it in the near future. Now i don't really know if i believe him or not since i've never heard any one else say that except for one other guy who worked there too. So i guess if it is true then that would explain why its harder to find but at the same time if it really was toxic why would some stores carry it and others not. Makes no sence...but all the same whenever i find some i usually stock up on it.

There was a big scare a while back about the possiblity of asbestos being found in one of the mines that they were getting mica from. It turns out that the scare was fairly baseless, but it hasn't stopped the rumor mill from turning. As a result, a lot of stores quit carrying vermiculite. (You are more likely to find asbestos in your talcum powder than you are in vermiculite.)

Open up the phone book and find a nursery or garden store. They will have vermiculite, perlite, lime, and pretty much anything else you need.

seattlekid,

The downtown Seattle Home Depot carries the 4 square foot bags of Verm.
I know.... cause I buy it there.
This is a huge amount of Verm though...lolz
But it comes out cheaper in the end.....cost is like $12 or $14.
This bag will last a long ass time.

I think some Home Depot employees don't know what they carry in stock!
