Garlic flavoured myc

I used a jar of mashed garlic for an LC. No matter how hard I scrubbed, the garlic smell never really came off. I decided to make a B+ LC with it anyway and inoculate some wbs jars. Fast forward to today, I just popped open the wbs jars to spawn to manure. The entire contents of the jar smelled like garlic-mushrooms.

I thought that was weird.


I wonder if the fruits will taste like garlic.

If they do, next time try making an LC out of a T-bone steak.  Anything to help with the flavor would be welcome... :lol:

Here's an update on the weird garlic myc.


These were the two quart jars that, when opened, smelled of garlic. Jars don't appear to be bad eh?





This is 4 days into spawn, quick as shit, but now it smells like a mix of myc, garlic, and trash day behind a chinatown restaurant on a hot summer afternoon. It's getting pretty rank in terms of smell. The growth is THICK and DENSE white, which is completely different from what my (successful) mexicube spawn did. Check these out.






I guess I'm just gonna keep going with this to see what this turns out to be. But just keeping this without its foil cover in my room is starting to make me gag from the smell.



This is what my mexicube did, which behaved normally and is starting its first flush.

Well, I'm not sure what contaminants (if any) are present. It's probably not mold, else it wouldn't smell like this and possibly change colors. If it's bacteria that's causing the smell, the white stuff seems to be growing fast regardless.

If this thing ends up fruiting somehow, I'm prepared to take a bite out of fresh mushroom.

I just HAD to respond. Those things look NICE. I was thinking about adding garlic to my jars but worried about bacterial contamination. I thought the sulfides in the garlic would add to the macronutrient profile. By the looks of it that might be true. It was an effort to create a Psilocybe's favored substrate, cow dung, without actually using it. I always thought Psilocybes have a very fleshy sulfurous like taste. I made that connection when I recalled that sulfur is the chief component in skin. Sulfides mainly methylsulfides are responsible for the smell and taste of cooked meats. Sulfur compounds are also responsible for the smell of rotten meats. Sulfur is involved in a process known as putrefaction. And I believe Psilocybe species are secondary decomposers. Correct me if I am wrong.
