Garlic in substrate?
    #4526429 - 08/12/05 01:07 PM (19 years, 5 months ago)

Isn't garlic supposed to be a natural antibiotic?

Anyone know if it would hurt the mushrooms at all?

I think i might try this.

I haven't read of any ethnobotanical uses of it as an anti-fungal. Anti-septic and bactericide, yes. But if some of the common contaminations associated with growing are fungal, I don't know how useful it would be. Worth a try to see what happens, though.

Personally. Garlic gets moldy rather easily when being stored. It's very acidic. I'd avoid using large amounts of it. Maybe none at all.......

I would bet it would hurt the myc...works great for plants keeping the soil nice and clean of everything, planting some cloves..and I dont KNOW it would harm mushroom myc...just a guess..as hotnutz said, very acidic.

I do remember hearing of a group in California using garlic in the substrate for a pest repellent. However I think that adding dried neem leaves to the substrate would work better for a variety of reasons. Keep us posted!

i dunno about garlic, but honey for sure is an anti-bacterial.  it can be used as an anti-septic for cuts.  maybe if you added honey to ur spawn it would most likely lower your chance of contamination.  i added honey to my jars and i didn't get a single contaminated jar *beams proudly*

so i guess honey is pretty good to use if you don't have dextrose.
