so the government is making online gambling illegal because they don't profit from it. and if they don't profit from it, we shouldn't be allowed to do it.

i really hope that by pulling shit like this, more people move away from the 2 party system and start voting for other parties, like the Libertarian Party. you really can't win with democrats or republicans.

This is old news. This issue is older than (and in fact was indirectly being discussed by) our lovely representative's speech about thinking the internet is made of tubes.

i didnt hear anythin about it cause i'm in australia. i only found out cause a friend IMed me complaining that he cant play poker online anymore, then i looked into it a little more.

I don't know what Konnrade is talking about. Maybe this issue has been debated for a while but that hardly makes it "old news". The fact is that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act has just passed through Congress and President Bush is expected to sign the bill within the next few weeks. Online gamling in the U.S. is legal right now but that will most likely change in the VERY near future. I know all about this because a co-worker of mine spends most his work day playing poker online. He relies on it for part of his income.

yea, a bunch of my friends are into it, but that's how they lose most of their income. but it's their own choice what they do with their money, not the governments.

This isn't about ethics, it's been overtly stated that the government is doing this due to taxation concerns.

The government doesn't want people to be able to gamble without taxes. So they're shutting down a form of gambling that would require more than half-assed effort to tax, because they can't be bothered.
