Online Poker
    #3517991 - 12/18/04 08:42 PM (13 years, 2 days ago)

Anybody ever play online texas hold 'em? Im starting to get pretty good, and am tempted to play with real money. I think ,however, that it would be a bad idea. Im pretty sure that its easier to get better hands on the play money tables so that you will be tempted to use real money. Anybody have any idea how the website makes money? Do they take a percentage of the money you use on the site? Or do they put bots in the game that represent their interests?

I've lost money playing online poker - about $100 over the last month.

The way the sites make money is by raking the pot. Typically, for $1/2 10 handed hold 'em, they'll rake 25c. for every $5 in the pot. With 50 pots an hour, this adds up.

You can shift the odds in your favor by taking advantage of bonuses. Look at www.bonuswhores.com for information. Even with bonuses, though, you can lose money with a healthy dose of bad luck and/or poor play.

ShroomeryMcpot,

Dude I play about 80 hours a month. I have almost 900 bucks over 4 sites. Do what I did.......... I played freerolls Muit-Table tournaments. It was hard but I won a couple bucks then built that up . I have never made a deposit and 3 withdrawls. I have withdrew 1,150 bucks so far  Once you get some cash built up say 20-30 bucks then you can start playing low cash tables. Me I play single table tourneys 1-20 bucks buy in's. But you can play as you like. It took me about 120 hours of play before I got over a hundred bucks and I had to start from zero 3 times but I finaly got up

Here are the best sites to get into freerolls

www.betonusa.com

www.absolutepoker.com

www.alohapoker.com

www.bodogpoker.com

www.worldpoker.com

www.fulltiltpoker.com

www.noblepoker.com

www.jetsetpoker.com

www.pokerchamps.com

I just shot these sites of the top of my head the names are right but the links may not work. Do a google on the name. But I am sure the links work.

Plus goto www.bearshare.com and do asearch for poker books as there a some good ones to be had for free. Good poker play is not easy to master and willtake many hours of play but it can be done. Yes most people lose but there are many who win and win big and don't have jobs.

Playing online poker for money is quite easy. Look at the stats for a table, find a table where people are always going to the flop, and always seeing through to a showdown. Then sit in that table, lose a few bucks, then play real tight, and go all in when you get the nuts.

Generally, play at the 5-10 table will be weaker then the play at the 1-2 table because the rich guys with nothing to lose will be at the 5-10, while the 1-2 guys are mostly guys looking to make some quick money, i.e. the money means something to a guy who can only afford 1-2.

Anyone play on pokerroom.com?

www.pokerroom.com

I have not played there but I am checking it out now, thanks for the quick easy cash play idea. I have not really played on 5-10 tables yet but what you said makes perfect sense.

Poker online is an OK way to hone your poker skills, but it will never replace playing at a live table and learning to read people. The art of playing poker professionaly will never be learned in front of a computer monitor.

Myself, I'm no good but I love to play. We get together on weekends, bust out the chip set, and have games for fun (keeping our money where it belongs, in our wallets).

Anytime I wanted I could go play in tournaments here in town. Local casinos have them all the time. I work with guys who go down and play every weekend. Usually anywhere from $20 to $100 buy-ins. If a guy can make it to the final table he can easily go home with several thousand in prize money. Thats the way to really learn how to be a poker player.

Well that may be true but I have built some pretty good friendships playing on-line poker and a few of these guys have gotten very wealthy play poker on-line. Mostly because most on-line players are extremly weak. I am at the point where I going to start making real cash................... Yes.

And 3 out of the last 7 world series of poker was won by a on-line poker player. One of them had never set foot in a casino. There are many on-line players that are making very good cash.

i don't understand online poker. i thought the whole "skill" involved in poker was bluffing and reading other players. this can't be done online, really. thus it comes down to a bit of skill ("you got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em"), but a lot of luck - whereas real poker has a lot more skill, in the whole reading people part.

a buddy of mine lost like 1200 NOK (ummm like $200 or so) in 2 weeks of playing online poker. i laughed at him a lot. and then felt bad so lent him money to buy beer

I'm playin at pokeroom.com as I speak actually. I used to play all the time, but money has been tight lately and I haven't as much. A few months ago I won a 6 dollar tournament that had nearly 400 people in it, won me 500 dollars. Then I played some ring games and won around 250. That was the most I ever won in a short time. I must say that although they say the cards are completely random, a lot of bullshit happens. Like seriously one in a million type shit. It will never be the same as a real game, but I still love it.

Yes it is possible to read a bluff on-line and know when you have an idiot at the table. Plus most good sites let you keep a note book on players you play against often. I have been winning consistently for many months so I don't know what to say. But I did not start with a bunch of cash and lose to good players. I played for months on freeroll tournaments and got to know the game on-line. And I spent many hours watching tables and not play. Yes if you just deposit a bunch of cash and have no clue as how to play on-line your gonna lose big. That is how I make my winnings

The most important thing is proper paly and knowing your odds to win at all times. Reading a poker face is a good thing but not the most important. Knowing what cards to hold and what to stay in are very important. Just like BlackJack proper card knowledge is KEY

I used to think the same thing before I started playing, but once you play with the same group of people for a while, you can definitely tell if they are bluffing or not.

When a player only has 2 min to make his play you start to pick up on patterns in his play. And where the button is and the other players position to the first better is also a very important KEY to winning

hmmm i guess i should check it out sometime. actually, on second thought, i really shouldn't. i have really bad luck when it comes to gambling. that's cool that you've been winning consistently, fucknuckle - must be a damn fun and easy way to make a quick buck (if you are good at it, that is)

Well I have been keeping careful track of all my hours verse winnings........................... I have made about 57 cents an hour

So I am far from a big winner yet but getting there

Poker is a very crazy and frustrating game at times and requires stout discipline

I have made a few ventures into it, but I don't have the time to dedicate to becoming good...  Once I am comfortably off from some of my programming, maybe .  Soon enough, I'll be rubbin' elbows with fucknuckle on the high roller's table ^_^
