lights... are they very important?
    #612019 - 04/18/02 04:51 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Hi

I am trying to set up a terrium and I don't know how important lights are. I know that mushrooms grow towards light, but how much light does it need?

Does it need direct light? I see all these terrium set ups with lights on top, but then in a few teks i have read it says they just need indirect light.

I am going to set up a terrium in my basement, and use the indirect light my basement recieves through the windows. It is not very bright, but it is like if you were in shade under a tree type of light with clouds out on the day.

My question is, what should the minimum light requirements be for good fruiting?

Yes they need light. They are phototropic, so it doesn't have to be really bright. If you can see the cakes, it's enough light. When I did this what I did was buy on of those 33 watt brite stick floresent lights at Walmart for $10. Then I put it on a timer for 12 hours on, 12 hours off. I noticed the slight heat from the light really helped them grow too. The room was like 70, but the light helped raise the temp around the terrium closer to 80. I just laid the light on its side on the floor by the terrium. It worked great.
