How much light do you need in the fruiting chamber?
    #2703503 - 05/20/04 12:06 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I'm planning on making a PMP using one of those semi-transparent rubbermaid containers and it will be chillin in my closet. Currently it won't get any direct light at all, just whatever daylight creeps in the throughout the day. I got big sliding doors on my closet and they will usually be open. Will that be sufficient? I know shrooms don't get energy or anything off the light so I'm thinking that will be fine.

a couple minutes a day of indirect lightbulb glare will be all thats necessary. They only need light so that they know to start "spreading", to keep it short.

If you can see inside the setup you have enough light.

I was wondering if I had enough light as well, but I guess I know now. the nearest window is 20 feet away

no, its suggested about 12 hours of some sort of light is sufficient. You ever take your colonized jars out of your incubator for a few minutes to check on em and see whats up? i bet you have and i doubt you saw pins the next day...

anyway if they are in your closet theres not a lot of light getting in to begin with. I cannot tell you thats not enough cause i dont kno where in the closet, amount of light getting in the window etc etc. I say just put a small 15 watt light bulb somewhere in the closet above the grow chamber (so they grow up) and you wont have to worry bout anything

at first my chamber had indirect light and the pins were growing in all directions, as they matured, some even were growing straight down and touching the bottom. So all I did was shine a bright flashlight at them directly from above for about a minute and that was all it took to get them aiming straight up again.

I disagree. You do not need 12 hours of light a day, it seems his current setup is ideal and should do just fine. In fact, IME, I found that too much light caused stunts in growth (I was actually on a 12 hour schedule myself). After I put it to about 2 hours (I was using a flourescent bulb), growth was ideal. You only need a bit of indirect sunlight per day.

The first time my FOAF grew cubensis, he had a terrarium light hovering above the chamber, 24/7. Needless to say, it was overkill. He's noticed that just giving it some light a few times a day during the first week in the chamber works great. Transparent containers in normal room lighting seems to work well too. Or so I hear.

Well I'll probably just turn the light in the closet on a couple hours a night just to be safe.

Just indirect light is needed ony for few minutes aday is fine. I once only gave light to fan 3 times a day was one the best flushes ive  ever seen lighting should be the least of any ones problems

Basically, you want to trigger pinning. I'm not an expert on the subject, but I don't think light is crucial to continous growth. Then again, this FOAF had a bunch of very strange shrooms pop up during his total darkness experiment.

berto your 100% wrong... these are not marijuana plants, a couple of minutes, even 1 minute a day of light or indirect light is all that necessary. 12 hours a day will only get you bigger electric bills.
calling someone wrong is one thing, but quoting them and calling them wrong is worse.

I think you are wrong. Wrong is wrong, whether quoted or not. And speaking of which,

You are wrong too. Have you ever put your jars under 12 hours of light? I bet you have and I doubt you saw pins the next day as well. Pinning is a natural process. Theres no instant guarantor of pinning. There are ways to coax it along, like supposedly cold shocking or perhaps even temperature cycling, but it only is going to happen when it happens

mine only get light about 15 min a day when I turn the light on to check on them. other times they are in partial shade with little light from a distant window. could this be hurting the yields?
