Hey! My friends friends sisters cousins dog needs some mushrooms. The owner of the dog is going to be visiting friends in Colorado, Partically the Denver area. Can someone tell the owner of the dog when the mushroom season is and where he should look for them around the surrounding denver area?

nothing around denver, man. sometimes you can find Semilenceatas and allies in pastures in wetter valleys in the central rockies - but it's not the right time of year, and even it were, you're looking at a minimum three hour drive into the mountains... sorry paco

I was looking at various sources on the net and one site listed these as the actice shrooms of Colorado: Gymnopilus sapineus, Panaeolus papilionaceus, Conocybe cyanopus. However I am having trouble finding specefic information about these species, such as habitat and season. Currently it is snowing in my region so I cannot go hunting. Th next couple of days the weather is supposed to rise, so I look forward to do some hunting then.

I'm in the Denver area. The mushroom season is over for this year. The only ones you'll find until next spring will be the occasional Flammulina velutipes and similar mushrooms that can fruit under winter conditions. And, of course, various dried or decomposing mushrooms (but not many) from earlier this year.
In the mountains the season ends in mid September for most mushrooms. In town it usually ends around the first significant snowfall.
If we have a normal year next year the first mushrooms will start appearing in April or May. We mostly need the drought to end to have a good season next year.
Happy mushrooming!

Thak you for the quick reply. As you know, in Colorado it can snow one day and be 75 degrees the next day. In these warm parts of the winter is it still possible for some fruiting to take place?

doubt it. i've never seen any mushrooms past september or october. conditions are really poor in general around Denver area and worse in the winter. even though the temps may get there in the day, humidity will be way low and temps at night way cold. better start growin!

As another poster said, I doubt it. You're right that it can get pretty warm, but it won't be warm enough for long enough for most mushrooms to fruit. And if somehow it were warm enough, it would be too dry - we are still in a huge drought.
Start thinking about hunting again around April. If we get enough moisture.

Why did I have to get into mushroom hunting right as the season ended? Oh well, guess its time for me to get some spore syringes. Thank you for the help.

you probably won't have much luck "in season" either, so you're better off doing it at home.
