Huge Amanitas with several pics

I just received permission to use a large plot of land as part of my biology studies and already have found many, many very strongly healthy stands of all manner of mushrooms. The first and most obvious were the amanitas. I'm working on improving my knowledge and ID skills and would appreciate a more positive idenitification of these if possible. I'll add the spore print information tomorrow, I was just stunned by how large they were and wanted to share the pictures.

There are a ton of varieties out there and I have anecdotal evidence of more promising finds, so we'll see. Getting right to it:

Habitat: Woods - Found in deciduous woods, growing straight up out of the leaf litter to the side of the main path (see image).



Gills: The gills are pretty much ivory white. Some stretch the entire length of the underside while others abort partway up (see image). They are free on the inside near the stem and are bound on the outside of the cap.



Stem: Stems are same ivory color with some tendency towards browning, as with a nicely toasted marshmallow. They are solid with the center core being more starkly white than the outer area. The base is textured. (see image)



Cap: The caps are distinctly yellow-orange, darkest in the centers fading to more yellow towards the edges. White material in rings about the center of the cap, colored and textured much like the stems. Edges of cap show indentations from the gills on the other side. (see image)





Spore print color: Print was white\ivory\colorless. I only had white paper on hand.

Bruising: Practically no color change observed. Could maybe say they brown a little, again, like a toasted marshmallow.

Location: Picked in michigan.

They're freaking huge. It's a beautiful piece of land that I really look forward to doing research on. Pics of the specimens in their entirety:

Without a microscope and some chemicals those are gonna be tough to ID reliably.

A *wild* guess would be A. flavorubens, but that's only a wild guess.

Thank you.  I tried to be thorough and clear.  It was my understanding that one of the helpful identifying traits for Amanita muscaria var formosa was the shaggy base.  I'm not sure what else they could be if not formasa, but I was hoping someone would be able to tell me one way or another so I could be absolutely certain.  I have more pics if necessary, but thanks for the implied encouragement  :grin:

Just curious, but why did you guess A. Flavorubens? I think the cap color, shaggy base, white warts, and white volva rule that one out. I'm no expert by far, but my wild guess would be A. Frostiana. Although the base in the pictures are somewhat shaggy I think they lack the concentric rings. If the base had the defining concentric rings I would have guessed they were Amanita muscaria var. guessowii. I think a guess, though, is as good as anyone ever will ID those, especially the yellow ones since there are just too many that are closely related. Even with a microscope and chemicals they would still be hard to ID.

A. frostiana only gets up to about 3 inches across.

A. muscaria is also a possibility.

As you said, IDing these guys can get to be really difficult, even with a microscope and chemical reagents.

Hhhhmm guys, if you dried them and they turned golden would that indicate that they were either v.formosa or a.muscaria (they don't cross do they ?)?

I'm not ready for that just yet, if at all. I was going to dry them but didn't get on it quickly enough for lack of equipment where I am. Unfortunately, I lost them -- the caps developed a delicious greyish goo over them after less than 24 hours.

I didn't harvest all that I found, not by a long shot, and there's lots of land to be explored yet. I won't pull again until I have suitable facilities ready.
