Datura inoxia
    #6055042 - 09/12/06 08:34 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

There is a Datura inoxia growing outside the front door of one of the buildings on my college.  Don't worry though I'm not going to eat any of it, however, I am going to grab a seed pod.  They look cool and will look good in the garden I am planning for next year.

Watch out they self seed heavily. They can become a bit intrusive. Datura metel is better about this. As well it is, in my opinion, a more attractive cultivar with a much better scent. However D.inoxia is a cool looking plant and free is free. Have fun with that but not too much.... :reaper:

How do you know when the seedpods are good to pick?

yea the pods will break open around the tip(bottom) and seeds will start to fall out

thats a good sign the pod(and seeds) is ready

also, i recomend putting the seeds on a paper towel and letting them sit out overnight....
sometimes they retain a bit of that white flesh from where they broke off the inside of the pod....
if this is not dry and you bag them, there is a chance of rot or fungi setting in and ruining your seed

Cool, thanks. Not quite ready yet, although the plant looks like it is going to bloom again. Those flowers are pretty.

You can get mature seeds before the pods break. After they get to a certain size and stay there for a while they are usually mature. The seeds are tan when mature and white if they aren't. They usually put out a bunch of seed pods so chances are you don't have to worry about acquiring seed stock.
