The other side of poverty (like no medicine/improper nutrition)
    #6043532 -

What if you were really on the other side of things? Not just poor but starving and so on? What if that was all you had ever known like some kid in Angola or Bangladesh or something? Wouldn't you think, like, if you were on the other side and had a place to stay, steady food and water and health care with money left over for beer and movies or whatever that you would give whatever you had leftover to people like you who were dying from poverty? I guess my question is 'Don't you believe in your heart that deep inside you are kinder than you really are?'. It makes me feel disparaged that humankind, myself included, is so selfish. In that sense, it's really sickening to be human. Of course we're animals but it's so sad to know better but to still be the same way. A greedy fucking cunt who would let another human being starve just to get that six pack or new cd or whatever. I'm more generous than most, I swear, and I give to charities but really how could I consider myself a good person when I am so passive about the suffering in the world? Why I am so greedy that I take more than I need when others are lacking? It's shameful. And shameful more that I will continue on the same fucking way after I post this message.

Personally, I feel we each have our own path, that you have nothing be be ashamed of or to feel guilty for. Enjoy what you can. After all, beer makers and recording artists have to make a living too. Buddhist philosophy was born out of that which you describe. I'm more prone to the belief that life is only possible through the interaction of opposing forces (Ying-Yang thing). That one should embrace and appreciate the good because one is forced to endure the bad. Maybe you continue on because you are smart enough to realize that there there is little if anything you can do to change the nature of existence.

read my post that I just made about Food-Not-Bombs.

Yeah, beer brewers and cd artists need to make a living too, but how much of their income is being spent needlessly because our culture requires us to eat pre-packaged food, drive dozens of miles in cars by ourselves to get to work, and never let the temperature inside our houses get above 75 degrees?

We are brainwashed to waste and consume so that those in power can make profits. We have enough surplus to feed the hungry, they just won't give it out for free.

Like many have said before me, its hard to believe that it is 2006 and still half of the world live in poverty. All it takes is 10% of what the world spends on weapons to feed every child, educate every child and to give them the same opportunities we take for granted every single day.

1% was meant to put every child into education by the year 2000.

No offense to you guys, but I think you need to do some research on what causes extreme poverty before beating yourselves up about consumerism. I'd suggest looking at this:

http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=6364

If you don't have time, here's the most relevant bit:

Quote:
The Zimbabwean Congress of Trades Unions has requested, and secured, donations of free hygiene pads from donors in South Africa and Great Britain.

In a farcical twist, the Zimbabwean authorities refused to award the shipments duty-free treatment, demanding the cargo first be quality-tested. It may seem astonishing that government officials in a country undergoing social and economic implosion should think twice before exempting the much-needed products from an import tariff or that they should have the nerve to demand quality-testing for imports from a comparatively affluent and well-run country like South Africa.

The reality is that the most extreme cases of poverty (I'm refering to the true starvation mentioned in the opening post of this thread) are usually the result of direct theft on the part of a government or other faction at work in the impoverished nation.

The true tragedy is not really how few people give, but rather the vast number and organization of the people willing to take by force (as opposed to earn, which i don't think many would be opposed to)

I work hard for my shit.
I see no reason to feel bad for being born in a country that's well off.
