Need a little advice from the aquarist people here..

I'm planning on adding some rocks to my tank to give my fish some hiding places -
I'm wondering what types of rocks I can use that would be safe for the fish. What would be a good rock to build caves and tunnels out of, but wouldn't dissolve in the water and kill everything? Are there any products that you can spray onto rocks to make them waterproof and keep them from dissolving (and obviously not affect the water itself)? I'm sure there's something at Home Depot or something..

Anyone recommendations for rocks?

Lava rocks work good...just boil 'em, then put 'em in there.

or if you have a river/lake near by, grab some nice natural ones :smile:

sometimes you can also find pretty neat rocks at landscaping places and such too.

shale can also be used.

there's no substitute for live rock.
i have 30 kilos of it in my tank, it's alive and funky..............

Well, it depends on a lot of things, really.

For starters:
1. Fresh or salt?
2. What kind of fish, if fresh?
