Possible bright white contam on casing
    #600671 - 04/06/02 05:58 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

a friend just cased two PF style cakes two days ago in a 50/50 mix with crushed oyster shell. he already has 3 spots where there is either mycellium or contamination creeping around the sides fairly strongly. It certainly is not the a greyish color that he has heard that cobweb mold is it is a very bright white color. the only reason he questions it at all is that it seems like the white fuzz is covering the casing mixture as opposed to more or less coexisting with it (if that makes any sense) and doesnt quite as stringy like mycellium. should i cut out the chunks and spray with a hydrogen peroxide mixture to be on the safe side? if so what concentration? i know it is hard for anyone to tell without a picture but any advice will be appreciated.

Sounds like mycelium to me. Is it dense? I mean cobweb mould isn't, and it looks like its name...........cobwebby.

Look in the pic forum for some casing pics, should give you a good idea of what mycelium looks like in a casing layer.

Also, how thick is the 50/50 casing layer?? Did you sterilise it??

Good luck

he did sterilize it in the microwavew for several minutes... the layer is between 3/4" - 1" thick. he has only cased once before and it was two cakes already on their third flush. it was on a whim and turned out quite nicely fruiting several more times. it was just a bit shocking to see it pop up so strong and fast. i suppose i will give it another day or so before doing anything rash. thanks for the input and any more from anyone else is appreciated.

Watch if it changes to green.

the white patch is still white and roughly the same size (no noticeable spreading). contamination would have spread rapidly correct? is it safe to say i should just patch it to promote an even flush and leave it alone?

You should probably leave it alone but under observation. From what I hear it sounds like mycellium. I have seen something similar. It's bright white, it's fluffy, it spreads slowly... I don't think you would be seeing ropiness anyway as those are rhizomes and *I think* those develop later.

On the other hand what I have not seen is grey/green tinting developing on the cakes in the fruiting chamber (visit my post for some pictures). If anyone knows what it is (no one is replying) then please write something.
