First you must put the DVD files onto your computer which could take over 7 gigs of space. I usually use DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink, or CloneDVD. Then you can convert the files to .avi, I suggest using a tutorial from videohelp.com

If you just want to copy the DVD to another DVD then I recomend using DVD shrink because it lets you take off the things tyou dont need so it will fit on a regular 4.7 gig DVD

This was my answer in another thread with the same question.  :smirk:

these are 1 hour recordings of high school chemistry classes being done as a part of a research project. the video recorders use 1.4 GB dvds to record video.

i'm looking for an easy way to get what's on the dvd's from indiana, where the school is, to pennsylvania. encoding the dvd video in a compressed format and sending it by ftp seems like the most direct root, but i'm not familiar with the encoding software for windows and there's no way the guy in indiana is going to be able to set up a linux system and use the dvd::rip with which i'm familiar.

i've looked all over for programs that are comparable to dvd::rip that run on windows, but can't find anything. i've been waded through about a dozen sleazy, poorly made commercials masquerading as software so far, and nothing yet has worked satisfactorily.
