Can a civilian in USA (california) legally carry an expandable baton?

I'm worried about my safety sometimes so I thought it might be a good idea to carry a pocket baton that expands to 21 inches. I wouldn't want to stab anyone, plus a knife's reach is very small (especially considering a small blade is legal and big blades aren't) and I'm not a big guy so I don't have a long reach.

I'm only interested in protecting myself and would not be opposed to breaking an attacker's arms, legs, or cracking their skull if need dictates. Could this kind of baton do that?

I know if I assault somebody with it I could get in trouble for assault with a deadly weapon but if it was in self defense I'm golden, right? Is it legal to carry this type of weapon on my person?
