anybody have a street legal dirtbike?
    #2906086 - 07/19/04 07:03 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

i'm trying to hook myself up with a 125 cc dirtbike. i'm looking at getting a honda or kawasaki (because of their prominent names and availability of replacement parts). i want to use this as my primary mode of transportation(besides cruising on my bicycle). i don't really need to drive as of now and i bicycle ride everywhere but now i want a dirtbike fitted with mirrors, turn signals, brake lights, and a liscence plate so that i can run it on the road. i'm looking at 125 cc because i have no need to take it on the freeway, just to ride it around the various neighborhoods and out to the beach and such.

does anybody own or ever ridden a street legal dirtbike in the 125 cc range? i would like to hear somebody's input here. thanks

Yeah you can legally drive an older one on the street but you might want a 4 strike one because a 2 stroke one is gonna be kinda old...
I have a 1976 Suzuki 400cc endoro thats street legal ...they have really nice st legal 4 stroke enduros and thats probably what you want
I think 2 strokes are illegal in California regardless of how old they are

i'm planning on getting a 4 stroke with an engine 250 cc's or preferably below, nothing higher at all. i've never ridden a motorcycle and i want to ease into the whole thing so i'm going with a smaller bike.

i love the look of the off-road bikes though so that's what i want most of all, then i just hook up some lights, mirrors, and get it registered and it's street legal right? would off-road bike tires work well on the street? if i'm going to get a 125, 200, or 250cc bike what would the top speed be about? and also, i know the engines are usually no larger than 2 gallons (i checked yamaha's website) on these smaller bikes, what's the mpg usually around?

You cant just put lights on them and be street legal ...On the older 2 stroke enduros they have to have been street legal when they were made in order for you to legally drive the streets....in otherwords they were registered at some time in the past

This is my ride (at least a picture of the same model/year as mine). I bought it almost 3 years ago. It was my only mode of transportation for 2 years and I still ride it to work a lot to save gas.

It is a Kawasaki KLR250. 250cc 4-stroke.
I love this bike. I would highly reccommend it to anyone looking for something to get around town on. If a guy planned on doing any traveling or lots of freeway miles he'd be better served by the 650cc model of the same bike. But for running around town this 250 is a bitchin ride.

To answer a few of your questions you have...

A 250 is not too much bike for a beginner, especially in a 4-stroke. 4-strokes have a lot of low-end torque (unlike the "zippiness" of 2-strokes) and as a result you can 'lug' them around at low speeds easier and always have plenty of manageable power at your disposal (in other words, a 4-stroke 250 is less likely to throw you off than a 2-stroke 125). However, any beginner should always get some good instruction from some knowledgable people.

Off-road tires work fine on the street (as long as you aren't trying to act like an idiot and take corners at ridiculous speeds thinking you are on some crotch-rocket). I am still running the original tires (knobbies) that came on my bike after 3 years (although they are getting ready for replacement).

My bike holds about 2 1/2 gallons of gas. Running around town I usually get around 60-70mpg. I could probably stretch that closer to 90mpg if I changed my riding habits or if I was to just go for a long cruise on the freeway.

As for top speed.....I'm just not sure with my bike. Fastest I've ever run it was about 70mph. It still had some to go but I didn't want to push too close to the red-line on the tach. But my bike is also geared fairly low so I can go trail riding and putt around at low speeds. If you were to change the sprockets I'm sure you could push this bike over 100mph pretty easily. I just don't see why you'd want to.

I pay about $30 a month for full coverage. You can get it for a lot less than that if you just carry the minimum amounts required. But I like the security of full-coverage.
