Puerto Rico, owned by the usa, but not a state??

anyone want to explain this one to me? 4 million people live there, they assert themselves as a united states terrority comonwealth.

apparently guam falls into this category as well.....
i found out that puerto rican's are granted u.s. citeczenship, but to what degree are they allowed to travel, live and work in the usa?

It's unofficially been the 51st state for a long time. I dunno, maybe they just like the look of 50 stars on the flag and don't want to change it along with all the history books and such. *shrugs*

well oficially it isnt a us state, and currently recieves only 15% of the amount of money from the federal government that it would if it was a state.

also access to key social security and other federal aide programs are not avaliable, plus legally the usa can recind the us citczenship at any time for every one of the 4 million inhabatants.

also trade is highly controlled between it and the mainland.

yeah..I believe a large part of not accepting puerto rico is simply that it doesn't have much to offer outside of scenery- the place is dirt poor, has tons of problems and making it a state would spread that around.

I believe the US has wanted to annex them for some time , but they , PR , keep voting it down .

My father was born in Puerto Rico and emigrated here on his 18th birthday. Everything I have seen tells me he is a US citizen.

there are a lot of economic reasons why we od not make PR a state.

1. BY keeping them a territory it ppermits us to keep there minimum wage lower then our (USA) minumum wage,but we cans till pt Made in USA on any product made there.

2.Horrible drain on welfare system and other social programs without them having anything to really contribute.

3.Most of PR votes Democratic and that doesnt sit well with republicans.

4.They are Puerto Rico for gods sake,do we really want them to be our 51st state.I mean Guam or the virgin Islands would be cooler and less dirty,and while we are at it lets get rid of Alabama and arkansas adn jsut keep the same flag we can annex them to Puerto Rico and they canm for form their own sovereign country.

Puerto Rico has NOTHING to offer. If it where not for the US they would be like Haiti. I was born there but my parents are not Puerto Rican.So I have no idea why the US wants it so bad they do nothing but waste money and all the beaches where ruines by waste companies.

It's a territory of the United State and it is up to them if they want to become a state. Every time the chance to vote comes up, the Puerto Rican citizens vote it down. What do they have to gain by becoming a state? They have all of the amenities of being a part of the United States, without the troubles
