You may want to check out some of Jerry's solo shit.
Shady Grove The Thrill is Gone Sitting here in limbo and then some other traditional songs.
Jerry was quite the shit even outside of the Grateful Dead.

Listen to the live stuff. None of the Dead's studio work is all that great--"Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty" are the only studio albums I have. Pick up some Dick's Picks, listen to some shows at the Internet Archive. Jerry's solo work with the Jerry Garcia Band is phenomenal. It's more of the stuff Jerry loved--Dylan, the Beatles, Freddie King, Motown, some of his tunes, etc. His work on "Old and in the Way," playing banjo, is also great. And the stuff he did acoustically, from the Almost Acoustic Band (with Sandy Rothman and David Nelson) to the last stuff he did with David Grisman and company is his document as a roots player. Jerry Garcia was pure Americana, encompassing old-time, blues, jug-band, folk, jazz, flamenco, and rock into one inimitable style. That said, "Box of Rain" is a Phil Lesh tune about his father. And it really is a beautiful composition.
