Renting question

Ok, so I rent a duplex and have the bottom half of the house. The guy that owns the place is trying to sell the whole place. Now I know most people would buy the place and just rent it out and make money off of it. But what happens if somebody buys it and wants to live in it? They can't kick me out, can they? I have a 12 month lease that is still good for another 11 months, but that's with the current owner. Wouldn't there be a law about something like this?

If the new owners don't want you there then you're gone! I believe they have to give you a reasonable amount of notice. But yes, you can be kicked out if the landlord sells.

That doesn't seem right. I mean, if the current landlord could sign a 12 month lease with us and then just turn around and sell the whole place to someone who wants us out, that's just asinine.

When the property no longer belongs to the landlord the lease is no longer valid and you're basically SOL. But look into local laws on this issue.

God damnit. Two guys just came to look at the place and they only looked at the downstairs. If they buy it and want us out I'm going to go apeshit crazy. It'll be impossible to to find another place to rent around this college town after the semester starts.

Yea that's a shitty situation dude. My friend just moved from his apartment because the owners put it up for sale.

Yeah, the current owner's daughter and her fiance live upstairs. So if those two guys wanted to buy the place to live in half and rent the other half I'd bet both my nuts that they'd be moving into my half.
