Psychotria Viridis Cuttings
    #5946644 - 08/09/06 05:55 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

This has probably been answered before but I can't find a thread on it. Does anyone have any experience with making P. Viridis stem cuttings, if so do you have any tips or suggestions? In particular did you use rooting powder, did you root in water before putting in soil & what conditions are best for the unrooted cuttings?

Leaf cuttings are a seperate issue but I've tried making one of these but don't know if it's taken or not, how long should I expect to wait before a new growing shoot emerges?

Thanks

A good while. As in a few months or longer. If you have it in a humidified chamber and its not dead, than you are doing it right. I think it was 3 months before I got impatient enough to check and see if it had rooted and it had. I didn't use any sort of rooting hormone. If you have some rooting gel that wouldn't be a bad idea. When doing a stem cutting just make sure that there is a node for it to root from. Its not at all hard to take cuttings from this plant. It just takes a good bit of time. I have 15+ plants from about 6 leaves though. Its worth it.

It takes months with the leaf cutting. I always use rooting powder. The leaf will in some cases die, right up until the point where it meets soil. I have had darn near 100% sucess rate with leaf cuttings. Give it time. If there is green on the leaf it is growing.

I have had leaves that produced 3 plants each. The secret is snapping the midrib that goes up the center of the leaf. Where ever that rib is broken that will help promote either a shoot or a good root. Moisture and time is all thats needed after that. Its a good time of year to do it. Because they should be established by the end of the growing season......

Thanks, info on the leaf cutting is useful & it looks like I'll have to wait a while yet before it 'sprouts'. Does anyone know anything about making stem cuttings though?

Cut a 4 inch tip and stick it in some moist dirt.

It turns out I didn't have to wait as long as I'd though. I checked my first leaf cutting a few days ago & it's got 2 wee stems with a pair of leaves on each stem coming up, unfortunately there's also mould covering all the soil in the pot - I guess I kept it too humid. I'm not sure how long I've had the leaf cutting sitting, I think it's probably over 2 months now. Now that leaves have emerged what's the best way to ensure the wee plants don't die, should I take the humdity cover off completely, leave it on or start taking it off for longer periods to acclimatise the new plant. I was thinking of just leaveing the mould (or scrape the worst bits off) until I manage to get some decent chesunt compound or chinosol as it hasn't caused any harm up till now but I'm not sure. I suppose if I take the humidity cover off it wouldn't be a problem.

Cut down on the humidity a bit and everything should be fine. I would still use a chamber.

I grow all of mine with no humidity chamber, so removing it will be fine. keep babies under flouros if possible. They do grow much faster in partial sunlight, but my zone can bake them quick. note, the leaves grow under flouros will appear somewhat wrinkled, they look normal once moved outside. I wait until i have three small leaf sets before moving outside. Just started 40 more leaf cuttings!!!!! used the individual 12 packs in the walmart seed starter kits.

there was a thread once about adding hydrogen peroxide to a spray bottle and misting ur leaflings like that from the start. supposedly the h202 will destroy the mold and clean the roots. there was some info about h202 being good for cannabis root systems, making them healthier and stronger, i wonder if its the same for viridis?

It's the same for all plants, it's the reason why watering with rain water is better than tap water, because rain contains a degree of h2o2. Apparently the extra oxygen molecule will bond with carbon molecules with a positive ion (I think it's positive) such as moulds, thus neutralising them. I've got some info somewhere on h202, if I can find it I'll post it.

Didn't find anything as useful as I'd though. Mostly it's on Ozone (O) which often bonds with H20 to form H202. "Today the largest commercial use of ozone is in the purification of water. Both the FDA and EPA certify ozone as destroying 99.9992% of all pathogenic germs, while oxidizing (destroying) 99.9992% of all pollutants in the water at the same time."
