Calcium Chips = Crushed Oyster Shell ???
    #5925350 - 08/02/06 12:52 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I asked for crushed oyster shell and the clerk gave me a bag of calcium chips. I didn't notice until I got home and read the package. So, I called the clerk and she told me that calcium chips are the same thing as crushed oyster shell. I just want a second opinion since the other day (at a different store) a clerk tried to tell me perlite and vermiculite were the same.

You want oyster flour not crushed oyster. Flour, not crushed.

When they say they are the same its because they are asuming you want them for planting flowers and such, they would have no Idea you need them for mushrooms

Crushed shell will do little to adjust pH.

Crushed oyster shell is an awesome casing ingredient. It adds texture and helps to keep the mixture from packing down with repeated mistings. That's why it's often recommended by experienced mycologists for use in a casing layer. Hydrated lime, or limestone flour is used as a ph buffer. Gypsum is also added as a source of calcium and sulphur, as well as to prevent ph swings.

You might be able to put the calcium chips in a coffee grinder to reduce them. What size are they? Does the label show the source of the calcium?

RR,

The chips are York brand:

Particle Size = .8 - 5.0mm
Magnesium = less than one percent

This bag says it is a poultry feed supplement to increase feed efficiency and to improve eggshell quality. Made in York, PA. The source is not mentioned on the label. Do you think they will work?

Ok, thanks. Now I come to find out oyster flour is preferable. I wish people would keep those damn Teks up to date before I go out in 100F+ weather trying to track all this crap down and then end up returning it. Sorry, this weather is really frustrating when you live without A/C :/

Dude. The crushed oyster shell is great. Keep it. It's just not a good ph adjuster. It still is a great addition to your casing layer. Use hydrated lime or limestone flour for ph buffering as said above.
