Pink oysters in Mycobag
    #580986 - 03/16/02 11:31 PM (22 years, 17 days ago)

Test of a Pink Oyster culture syringe with a standard Spore Work's Myco-Environment bag. I have grown regular oysters before but this pink one has got to be the fastest most aggressive thing I have ever seen. According to Stamets' GGMM, this species can colonize unpasturized substrates before any competitors get a foothold. I imagine poorly sterilized substrates would be even better.

Day 1: Injected culture into myco-bag through selfhealing injection port
Day 3: Substrate fully colonized
Day 8: Small hole put in side of bag
Day 9: Mycelium beginning to turn pink in areas
Day 11: A tiny pink match head sized pin suddenly appears at hole
Day 12: (Today) Rapid growth of fruit body (see picture)

The mycobag is too small to make enough mushrooms for a meal but it does work. Serious production would be on large amounts of sawdust, straw or other woody plant waste.

Here ya go. How it looks today.

It is growing strangely. Each cap seems to be sprouting dozens of secondary pins on the cap surface. It should be a good mass if they all mature. I am not certain if this is typical growth or not at this point.

They grow this way if they got too much CO2.

yup...they are growing little staghorns like the reishi does with high CO2 ..purposefully though..
well not exactly but same results..not intended for oysters....but...experiment away.
pretty things aren't they....

The final result. They just kept branching and rebranching like coral and never did form a proper cap. Oysters tend to be very CO2 sensitive and my grow chamber must not have enough fresh air for oysters. I have cut the top of the bag off and have placed a loose piece of plastic over the top for a humidity tent and put it in my kitchen. We shall see how the second flush looks.

Even though I only grew a mass of tough stems, I thought I'd fry it up and taste it. I have never eaten this species before. As expected, it didn't smell too good as it was cooking. But when it was cooked crispy, it wasn't bad. Much better than I expected, but still not my favorite. Fully formed caps must be better.
