those who use silica gel crystals...

i picked up some silica gel crystals today at a crafts and flowers shop. the bucket says to lay flowers on top the the silica and poor more silica over them. now i know this is not a good idea to do with mushies. is this used the same way as any other dissicants? i ussually use damp-rid but it cant be reused as well.

shall i put some mesh over the silica and lay the mushies down? or is this shit used differently?

Yes. Or a paper towel. Make sure to close the container tightly afterwards. And to pre-dry the mushrooms using a fan.

yeah Im using a fan to pre-dry, the fan gets them near cracker dry. its the inside of the stems that have the last bit of moisture. I have split them with a blade, to help dry them out. thanks Anno

After fan drying untill as dry as possible, I place the shrooms into an open baggie that has the top rolled back to help keep it open. Then I place the baggie into a container, on top of a screen over the crystals. This not only totally dries them the rest of the way, but works well for long term storage.

Nothing preserves like a preserve jar!

After drying the shrooms, put them in a canning jar with a small pac of silica gel taped to the underside of the lid.

yeah Max! i keep all my dryed mushies in canning jars with a teabag full of dissicant.
