Indoor hydro vs Soil

So a friend of a friend gave me a prototype indoor self-contained hyro unit. The catch is it was the victim of sabatoge and neglect. He went in on the unit (which chemicals, accessories, and all is valued at 5,000) with a friend who turned out to be more of a "friend" if you get my meaning. This individual and their significant other, were basically stealing all of the bud. When my friend (as the principal invester) went to reclaim the device, the individual
(who is an electrician) had fucked with the machine. Since it wasn't opperational, it sat in his garage for 2 years. He was going to haul it to the dump,but didn't really want to, so he gave it to me. I have replaced the balast and the bulbs for the fluros in the cloning/sprouting chamber. The lights in there still don't work. I'm not sure if the water pumps work. I need to replace a couple of timers (@$33 a pop) I'm sure I can get this thing running again as normal. My question though is this: I have never worked with a hydro system. It seems much more labor intensive and complicated than a soil system. I'm sure I could learn, but is it that much more worthwhile? The rest of the specs are:1,000watt lifetime hps bulb in the flowering chamber and it is set up for CO2 and I have the tank and regulator I just need to get it filled. The flowering chamber has a 6 plant copacity.

popping in rockwool cubes and checking levels on nutes and ph an e.c. seems like a lot of labore? I would think lugging sacks of soil and mixing up amendments would be more of a pain. Yet it is a labor of love i am sure.

Hydro will make your plants grow faster, you will have less time from clone to harvest or seed to harvest. Depending on the strain your growing soil will take approx 6 months, hydro 3-4 months. Hydro means you will have 1 or 2 more harvests per year than soil grown.
I would reccomend organic hydro nutrients.
I would completly rewire the hydro system, it sucks being in mid flowering stage and then have somthing go wrong.
Get that CO2 tank filled at a welding shop.

you are going to also need to get a tester for the nuit water to make sure that it is right. also you need a ph tester and ph up and ph down. if you dont have rockwool or clay pebbles you will need those to. and i am sure that there might be more. i thought i didnt need the tester when i started and my leaves turned yellow and i didnt know why. i made the nuit as directed. but the tester told me that i need less salt in my water and a lil mor nuit. the directions dont tell you how your water is. they also dont tell you that spring water is bad for hydro setups because of the lack of salts. also after you have had it running there will become a salt build up and the tester will help with that to. tester costs 100-180 dollars. ph with up/down cost 15 or so dollars for the pool kit. clay pebbles cost 30 dollars to fill 6 plant pots and 60 for shipping.good luck it ended up costing me a boat load. lol . good luck

Yes the are more money but exquisite tasting bud, I spare no dollar for my dank. My white russian loves this shit!!!

WTF? I spend 10 weeks growing in soil. That's less than you say for hydro...

I grow Bushes in soil, buds in hydro , the way his plants are looking they are going to be bushes soon if he doesnt flower soon.
Some of my single cola- strains I can grow a bud as big as my forearm, it usually takes me 3 months to do so in my hydro system.
I also harvest 1/2-3/4 pound of off of my soil grown bushes. this takes 6 months or so.

What do you mean with bushes in soil? You grow outdoors?

The way his plants are looking? I haven't seen any pics

If it takes you three months in Hydro then how long do you have a vegetative state? Or do you grow sativas? They do take long to flower completely

How many pounds you harvest doesn't indicate anything if you don't post the output of your lights and number of plants.

edit: 6 months in soil? So you do grow outside

I grow both outdoors and indoors, I have grown 2 bushes in my house under 1 1000 watt hps. 1/2-3/4 pound per bush in a 10 gallon bag. I keep them vegging for 2-3 months
Most of the strains I grow are a mix of indica/sativa or sativa/indica.
When I harvest from the mother for hydro, the clippings spend 2 weeks in a 15 plant aeroponic cloner, first week with a dome the second I slowly subject them to fresh air and brighter light, transplant into a 9 plant aeroponic system 24/7 light after 2 weeks I flower.
And sorry I got two posts confused i thought he had pics...
My methods may not be the most economical but I grow some nice buds for me to enjoy!! :bongload:

when you clone you should clone before you harvest because most of the times the plant does not full come back from flower and it growes slower. if you take a cutting in veg then you keep it in veg and it grows much faster.

I have replaced the bulbs in the cloning chamber. I just went to Home Depot and got the ones that were about $9. Should I take these back and get my money and splurge on the $17-20 one that they had listed on that site? Should I keep the bulbs I have and get a more expensive fixture? (assuming that it is shot and that's why I can't get it to come on) Could I get a could I get a cheaper fixture and run the more expensive bulbs in it? The chamber we are talking about accomidates a 4-2ft bulb fixture. The chamber itself is approx. 2ft by ft and 4ft tall. It has what is supposed to be uv reflective coating on all of the walls. As far as a tester goes, he gave me a pH tester. I am assuming that they made their grow work without any other testing equipment. (also included was the pH up/down solution) The fertilizer that he gave me is synthetic. He claims that they spared no expense on it. In addition I am tight on $$$
:whatever: and will probably use what I have for now. Don't get me wrong when I re up I'll get organic for sure. So even if I used a really light soil mix with a 1000 watt HPS, a shitload of organics, and the CO2, you still think that soil would take significantly longer than hydro?

What many growers do for cloning is to have a mother plant. When your plants are vegging you take the best growing plant separately and put it in another room. Here you always keep it in a vegetative state and you can constantly get clones from it.

Grow out the plants keep the mother as the cloner. Clone several clones out and flower. Keep the mother in Veg. After figuring out wich LABLEd clone is that you like find the mother and treat her well. Ditch the rest.

Hate to bust bubbles but hydro or soil if you know what your doing the time from start to harvest is exactly the same. Yield is the same, potency is the same. the difference is in the taste and that is if you don't know how to flush.

Cups with soil you don't need huge pots, you don't need huge root systems yadda yada yadda as long as you deliver all the plant needs to it which is the basic theory behind hydro. With hydro mediums it is easier to do but as I've shown it can be done with soil.

Now this cup is hydro (flood and drain lava rock) With automated systems things are gonna be much cleaner. Good for apt grows.
Once you get good at hydro it isn't much more difficult then soil.

Take the clones from your vegging plants and put them under 12/12 from the day you take the cutting. You'll know the sex of your plants before the cuttings even root. this way the source mothers are never put threw the stress of going into flowering and then back to veg which in itself can cause hermies.

The grower I know  :wink: has done 6 crops a year since 1989 and did huge grows in Humboldt and Mendocino county for 6 years before that.
