Has anyone heard these Bluegrass pickin fellas?
They're playing here tommorow and I've been hearing highly of them...
Anyone got anything to say about these guys? Is it worth seeing 'em play with Hot Buttered Rum?

Little Feat is one of the greatest rock bands ever, folks. I saw them twice this spring, both being spiritual experiences. The band combines rock, boogie-woogie, jazz, funk, and a little country into an improvisational feast for the ears. Their most famous live album "Waiting for Columbus" is an absolute masterpiece, and everything else is waaay good.
The band formed in the early 1970s under the coke-induced genius of Lowell George (who was a student of Frank Zappa and played in the Mothers of Invention). By the third album "Dixie Chicken" the core of the lineup was formed: Lowell on vocals on guitar; Paul Barrere, vocals and guitar; Kenny Gradney, bass; Billy Payne, vocals and keys; Richie Hayward (who is IMHO the best drummer on the planet since Buddy Rich died), drums; and Sam Clayton on percussion and deep vocals. Lowell died of cocaine poisoning in 1979. The group disbanded until 1988, with the release of "Let It Roll." They have been blowing the roof off wherever they played ever since.
It is truly a shame that not a lot of folks know this band; they are an American treasure and a special group of people (I have met Paul, Richie, Billy, and Sam a few times).
I am also a flatpicker and a huge bluegrass fan, but Little Feat is a rock band, for sure.
I hope you went to the show!

I did make it to this show and Little Feat rocked!!
I was a little discouraged walking into the show and seeing tons of seating and a bunch of older folk just sitting there....
By the time Little Feat came on though I had found myself a nice place with a bunch of local kids where I could rock out and dance.....
These guys played some awesome tunes and rocked it hard.... they even did a couple of Dead Tunes...
If anyone wants to check out a copy of the show its available at

An absolutely beautiful and spot on description. I think I may have seen Lowell George's last show with them. It was the last stop, in Buffalo, on his last tour. If not, so what. He was great, they were great. I saw them a couple of years ago with this female singer at BB Kings. Too bad she was there. The band fucking cooks though.
People who like Little Feat should also check out the Radiators. whisper: they just might be better, see Total Evaporation.

As an addendum, LG was a master songwriter. "Willing" probably his biggest hit. My favorite album by them, "Feats Don't Fail Me Now"

It's always great to turn young folks onto the Feat. I do also really like the Radiators (but not as much as LF). Lowell George was truly a master songwriter: "Dixie Chicken," "Fat Man in a Bathtub," "Willin'," "Salin' Shoes," "Spanish Moon," "Rock'n Roll Doctor," etc.
But as far as the jam-band scene goes, a lot of the younger folks are really missing out on group like LF, the Radiators, the Nighthawks, New Riders of the Purple Sage. These groups bring it every night, with great songs and tight jamming.
To be honest, I can't take stuff like moe, Drive-By Truckers, Phish. To each his (or her) own, but bands should write a few decent tunes before they break out the 20-minute jam sections. Peace.
