I almost didn't exist
    #5722742 - 06/07/06 12:46 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

My father served in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1978. He was stationed on the USS Guam (a small amphibious assault aircraft carrier). He was an air-traffic controller. After he got out of the Navy he got a job with a geophysical company that looked for oil pockets under the ocean floor. He ended up being in charge of several ships out in the Gulf of Mexico. He traveled all over the world and developed a deep love for the sea. He probably spent more time on ships in his life than he spent on land.

Before he died he told me several funny stories about his days in the Navy. In every single one of his Navy boot camp yearbook pictures he is flipping the bird. Also, one time in Italy he got completely drunk at a bar and stole a sword that was hanging on a wall. He walked out of the bar with it and was promptly arrested. He spent the night in a dingy Italian jail with murderers and rapists.

But, one story he told me was much more serious and tragic. On January 17, 1977 there was a serious accident. A small boat that was loaded with people from my father's ship was involved in a collision with another ship. This boat was ferrying men to participate in a quick shore leave. Here is the story as told by a military web site that I found:

In January 1977 GUAM recross-decked the AV-8's to the FDR and recovered HMM-264 from Sigonella. She rejoined the MARG at Naples and participated in exercise PHIBLEX 1-77 and then made a port visit to Barcelona, Spain. Catastrophe struck on the first night of this port visit when a LCM-6 landing craft being used as a liberty boat was struck by a Spanish freighter in the inner harbor and capsized. The boat carried over 100 enlisted sailors and marines half of whom drowned in the freezing winter water. Forty-nine crewman from GUAM and USS TRENTON (LPD-14) were lost in this tragic accident and a memorial to these men has since been erected in Barcelona.

My father and his best friend (a fellow sailor) were almost on that boat. They were going to the shore and at the last minute decided to stay on the Guam. There is a good chance that if he had gone on that boat he would have died and I would have never been conceived.

The men on-board the Guam were mad at the Captain for letting the accident happen. I forget what exactly he had done, but he had done something negligent which contributed to the crash. Several men got a heavy engine and dropped it from a great height onto the Captain's nice car. Needless to say, the car ended up being completely destroyed.

My grandfather was on a boat waiting to invade Japan. If the nuclear bomb hadnt been dropped he probably would have died. Interesting stuff

Fucked up isn't it?  How random life seems to be sometimes.

If neither of us had existed the Shroomery's history would have been irrevocably altered.  :smirk:

Indeed.

Any of us could've not existed if our fathers simply jerked to the left or right differently.

Got that nice mental image? If Dane Cook slapped his dad on the ass, he'd find himself instantly being another person, who probably wouldn't have had the skills to produce such a joke, and time travel, so he couldn't have slapped his dad on the ass to result in his own birth, and the universe would implode.

Yeah, it's messed up how those things happen. My father was hit by a drunk driver while putting road flares on the road for an accident. He was in a coma for several weeks and lost one of his legs. That was 12 years before I was born.

I survived a 100 foot fall, so if I ever have children then they can say that they almost were never born as well.

You ever think of the incredible miracle it took for all of us to be here. What I mean is, think back hundreds of generations, going thru it all, if just 1 little thing was different, we wouldnt be here. Say a mesquito bit my great x50 grandfather on the dick, and he didnt have sex the one time to concieve my great x49 grandfather. Know what I mean? fucked up.

The story was not an egotistical or a self-absorbed exercise. It was a story about my dad. If you don't like it then get the fuck out of the thread.

Definately. Stuff like that sometimes makes me think about fate and such. Is there a plan to reality? Is there a guiding hand or is it all random?

My dad was in Chechnya for two years. My dad made bootleg beer in Russia with a friend before his friend got busted but my dad managed to get away. My dad was a boxer; he skipped school and went to boxing lessons and then beat the shit out of people in boxing matches and sometimes outside of them. Chyea, beat that.
