Human Medicine and Pets

I was just wondering if human medicine is harmful to animals. The size difference between humans and my dog isn't different, and i know a drugs effect relates to body size in some ways. Hes a st Bernard/rottweiler and kind of old. Hes front left leg joint is in the process of blowing up (exaguration) and i was just wondering if i could give him a tylenol of Advil to ease his pain until we can get him to a vet.

This is him:

I know it's hard to see him suffer, but you shouldn't give human medicines to animals without a vets approval. It could be poison to them.

My parents' dog has arthritis and the vet said it's okay to give him an ibuprofein twice a day. he's been on that regimen for a few years now.

I don't know about tylenol specifically, but I do know that animals have different metabolisms, and different sensitivities to compounds, than humans. For example the xanthine (caffein-like) molecules in chocolate can be harmful to dogs...

I'd say be careful. Maybe there's an online veterinary site, where you could look up typical tylenol doses for different sized dogs, and whether or not it's even ok to give tylenol to dogs...
