Newb Question on Birthing

I read countless guides and some say to birth after seeing pinning on sides of the jars and other say after the outside is covered with mycelium + few days. I was wondering if there are advantages to wait for pinning? Or would it be easier to initiate pinning by birthing them when they are finally covered with mycelium? I am working with a standard BRF 1/2 jar. Thanks for your input all!

think you want to birth before pinning.

I birth mine ounce they get covered plus a day or two so the inside is more likely to be done, then I dunk for about 18 hours then put in fruiting chamber. Everyone has thier way of doing it. If this is your first time then fallow the tek and ounce you get that down you can play with it a little bit to see what works best for you. I would recomend looking up dunk and roll tek before birthing. It will help on the yield and it seems to be the general rule now a days. Hope that helped some. GL

thanks for the input, this site has been very helpful. I am a little skeptical about dunking though.

I birthed a cake after is had started to pin. I honestly thought all of my cakes were contam and didn't notice that this one was ok. My observation is that once it starts pinning in the jar, it is pretty much over colonized. I did birth the cake and it appeared to be stunted. I let a week go by and no new pins had shown. I then dunked the cake for 24 hours and put it back in the FC and sure enough, two days later, she's pinning! My next set of jars are going to get birthed just as everyone else has recommended. Let the jar colonize, wait a couple days and birth. Also..look into WBS or other Substrates for your next set of jars. Sooo much easier..higher yields..faster colonizing...++

Waiting for pins is a waste of good fruiting time IME. Full colonization + 3-4 days is my choice.

I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Ya I got priorities too!!!"

Once they're all colonized all around the outside I leave mine incubating for 3 more days to make sure the inside of the cake has time to colonize. After this period you can birth the cakes into your FC.

Don't be afraid to dunk, either. There's nothing more benefecial for PF cakes. Just dunk them individually in clean jars with a bottle cap or whatever to keep the cake submerged for 12-24 hours, after birth and after every flush. GL.

The reason for dunking is that most of the water in the jars is already used for the colonization, so you dunk to rehydrate to help the next part(fruiting).Like I have read many times mushrooms are mostly water, so they need enough to do the job, that why you dunk. I dunk mine in the same jar I colonized in. If I had made any mistakes in my reply I am sure the more experienced members will correct me. GL with your study

wow great input! I think I will try dunking and I guess I will use bottled water to be safe. Thanks a lot guys!
