What type of features of someone's personality make them "materialistic". You see this despcription a lot around these forums so it only makes sense to try and find a common ground on the subject.

they tend to believe the accumulation of material objects will result in happiness and thus give it priortiy over other pursuits, such as personal growth.

In my humble opinion, what makes a "materialist" is someone who only makes conclusions of reality based on the senses.

I suppose. I guess a materialistic person would be somone who relies on creature comforts to get through life, as opposed to substance

"Materialism" has two commonly used definitions. The more familiar one is that of someone who values material possessions too much. The other definition, often referred to as "scientific materialism," is a reductionist view which says that the only things that are real are those which can be measured. In other words, a scientific materialist reduces reality to the material realm.

Straight from the dictionary, addressing one of the two uses of the word...
Quote:
Philosophy. The theory that physical matter is the only reality and that everything, including thought, feeling, mind, and will, can be explained in terms of matter and physical phenomena.
I think it pretty much makes sense, with one glaring exception. Obviously, the nature of our mind can very well be resultant of physical phenomena, but the mind itself, being aware of its occurence, is not a physical phenomena.
It can be explained in terms of physical phenomena, something along the lines of quantam behavior and something involving holographs or some shit ( ), but yet the experience of having a mind, of thinking a thought, and being aware in general, is not a physical phenomena.
So fuck ya!
 Peace.

Yeah, perhaps then we arrive at the split point: Someone who thinks the spirit (consciousness/mind/soul) 'evolved' out of 'matter' ? They see the big bang first for this universe and settle all intelligence evolving out of it. Like matter matters only. Is there an opposite of a materialistic person ? A spiritualistic p. ?

Going from this it makes me wonder if I go through with 'Action A' before 'Action B', does this automatically mean 'Action A' is higher on my priority list or level of importance than 'Action B'?

Materialistic Person
Fun/pleasure > Fullfilment/meaning
-------------------- "People living deeply have no fear of death." "Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you perceive it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day. And you will come at last to love the whole world with an all-embracing love." "Our problems are man-made, therefore they may be solved by man. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings."

Actually, that's hedonism, though the two are somewhat related.

No, hedonism is finding fulfillment and meaning in fun and pleasure.
"Hey, you got your fulfillment in my fun!"
"Hey, you got your fun in my fulfillment!"
"mmmmm...two great tastes that taste great together!!"

Those are actually two different categories of "isms," not opposites.
