How long should substrate cool?.
    #560152 - 02/22/02 10:03 PM (16 years, 8 months ago)

Hi all,
Just sterilized some jars and am wondering how long i should let them cool?.
I read in the FAQ to leave them 6 hours at least, Would 6 hours be long enough?, Has anyone else innoculated after just 6 hours with success?.
Only asking because i normally sterilize in the evening and leave overnight which works out at least 12 hours or more.
All help much appreciated,
Thanks.

3 hours is prolly long enough. If you are in a hurry, put them in your freezer for a little while.

be a little careful with sealed hot glass jars in the freezer, or you might get some cracking

When the priests go to the trouble of sterilizing jars, i'd beat them to within an inch of their lives if they cracked my jars- wait till overnight - whats the harm in that - i dont know if deep in the inner core of the jar its cool - and i'd hate to find out by wasting spore solution!

Thanks everyone,
I just had the "Impatient Newbie Disease". I ended up occupying my mind till bed time and left my jars overnight to cool. I innoced with a GC and am hoping everything goes well this time concidering i had trouble getting that damn tape to restick, I nearly chucked the towel in.
I got some tassies happenin', Nearly 100%, I'll keep these as cakes cause all my casings seem to attract that green and cobweb shit.
Not bad, 2 uncontamed jars out of 4 attempts.
Can't find that antibacterial spray so widely used so i use a hell of a lot of bleach, Diluted to 10%.

If you are having trouble finding Lysol in the supermarket - try 100% rubbing alcohol - less residue and smell - also add a bit of hydrogen peroxide to your substrate water as you are mixing - it helps a lot - good luck!'
