Aussie mushroom field guide

Does anyone know of a good field guide to Australian mushrooms. Not specifically psilocybe mushrooms, but all mushrooms. There are many species of mushrooms in Australia, there must be a good guide available. Preferrably locally published, no point looking through pics of mushrooms that only occur overseas.

MJs guide on erowid for psilocybes is good, but it like stamets' work is a little lacking of good pics of our beloved mush. So i will supply some!!

Hey nice pics, its a pity my computer had to be reformatted and I lost most of my pics :frown:
I was thinking of traveling up to the Blue Mtns, Mt Wilson-  according to Mj            P. Cyans and P.Austaliana grow up there.
Now that i have a digi cam I will take some time in capturing them in their difgferent habitats like that mushroom from me I found growing directly out of dead fern frons.
Anyways good luck with further finds and hope to keep in touch.
We shoud create a webpage dedicated to Australian Psilocybes, documented with detail, locations,habitat, varieties.etc...

I would definitely be interested in being involved in an Australian mushroom website.  I have been thinking of putting together a flash/html mushroom website, maybe it should be exclusively Aussie shrooms. If anyone has any pics or info that should be included in such a site, let me know :smile:

Shepherd, C. J. and C. J. Totterdell. 1990. Mushrooms and Toadstools of Australia. Melbourne. Inkata.

This is an expensive book, somewhere between 40 to $60.00 U.S. Dollars.

Of course Japanese have a twop volume set for a few hundred.

ANyway this is the best book for Australia edible fungi and a fewof the other kind in it also. I have communicated with Dr. Shepherd when preepapring my paper on Australia and New Zealand.

Hey aussishroomhead :smile: I agree.. we should all put together something for our fellow australians!
I remember when I first got interested in everything shroomy how hard it was to find anything from an australian perspective on the whole mushy scene..
The Blue Mountains definitely have a lot of shrooms - wombat (don't know if he's still around) found heaps over there. Katoomba's also good. We should organise a couple of big picking expeditions :laugh:

I third (or fouth) the aussie page and would endevour to supply as many pics as possible.
MJ is helping me ID some of those species featured as we speak and i have spoken at length with a professor of Botany about IDing psilocybes and the problems associated with Australian native psilocybes.
Some good spots for Melbourne people are the Botanical Gardens, various gardens in Ivanhoe, along the river in Warrendyte, and various areas around Mount Dandenong. For Australiana in particular, you should check your local Pinus Radiata plantations. Ive found Ps.Cyanescens in many landscape gardens around Melbourne.

Well let's stop talking about it and get a site up. Any ideas for a name? I'll get into some designing and grab some of bluemeanies posted pics. Freeservers will host 12Mb (more than enough) for free and already have some mushroom sites up so they mustn't care about that type of content. Once we have a name I'll register the sub-domain. That is of course unless someone wants to front registering a domain. I reckon a free site would be ok for now. I'll post a new thread to get some ideas for names.

hello everyone
i'd definately be interested in a shroom expedition for melbournites/close to melbournites. I'm quite a novice, so wouldn't really know what to look for, but I would really appreciate some real life guidance and see the mushrooms up close and personal.
the aussie mushroom website sounds great too, names... "shroomland down under"? heh..

We should all wait until we can get our hands on a lrage batch of Subaeruginosa and then trip balls on these and decide the name then... I always seem to come up with very 'Australian' concepts when tripping on these.
MJ - how do you think Subaeruginosa compares to Ps.Cyanescens??
