Newbie Mistake or just Impatience? No pinning!

So this is my first time growing these beauties. Did PF cakes, cased some, left some a la MMGG. Ironically, I'm having doubts only about the cakes. Casings are awesome! BTW, It's my first time, did 24 jars, and for most of them, the surface colonized in less than 12 days and have had 0 contamination. Helps to be a doctor's son... I've read the FAQ, done some research, and have two questions: Being a newbie, I birthed the cakes as soon as the surface was entirely colonized, thinking this was "full colonization". I now have discovered in the FAQ that I should've waited a week after that to birth them, since the insides were probably not fully colonized. They've been in the terrarium for 6 days now, and they are almost exactly as they were on day one, except for perhaps two or three small white nodules growing on one. Did I screw them up? Or should I just wait? Or case them? or what? Of course, there's no way for you guys to know for sure unless I tell you that I kept them at what I think is 95+%humidity and mid 70's temps. Which segways nicely into my second question. I am relying on one of those cheap hardware store hygrometers that everyone bitches so much about. I just can't afford anything else. But it seems like it gives a decent reading. I take it to the shower with me, it reads 100%. I leave it sitting around, it reads anywhere between 40-60. I take it out of the terrarium, and immediately the needle starts moving downward. And I'm using an ultrasonic humidifier I already had it and I can't be misting all day. So it's not as easy as settling in on a number of mistings per day. So I guess my question is how much to rely on the cheap hygrometer, and if perhaps there are observational cues that can help me be confident that my humidity is alright. I'm so excited about these babies, I'm thinking all these questions are crap and I'm probably just impatient, but please help me out even if it's just to soothe my soul, please?

THanks, anno. Like many others you've pointed in the right direction, I didn't know the hygrometer calibration procedure was also in the FAQ. Now I'll be able to know what's goin on.

well, my friend would most likely suggest you buy some perlite :-) he had a pretty well built and planned ultra-sonic set-up with all kinds of neat timers and gadgets, when his cakes werent pinning he decided to try some perlite, he has a few pins now and is happy wth the switch. an ultra-sonic is a really cool concept if you can get it to work perfectly, but he found sometimes he would go take a peek in and the thing would be FULL of mist, and other times there would be none, he has heard this change in humidity could be good for the little guys, but not to this extreme.
