mushie growing under water

my friend has had a weird happening and he is not quite sure what to do. he has a rubber maid and in the bottom there is a plastic grate to suspend casings above the water in the bottom of tub. in the water there is a fish tank heater. well anyways a mushie has grown under the grate and is now currently growing under water. yes under water for about the last day. i just thought it was weird and i was wondering if anyone has ever had this happen to them. if so what did ya do. i hope it doesn't go black
