mycological societies?

I live in a major city and am thinking about joining a mycological society. Sounds fun...they go on field trips and identify all kinds of mushrooms. Does anybody have any experience with one of these or know someone that does? Just wondering what these people are like...

The people seem pretty cool and nice to me. They are pretty welcoming. I don't even have one in the state that I live in now, but I've been to others in the past.
It is one of the best ways to learn from experienced people and get help with identification. Very good idea I'd say.

As with any group of people there will be all sorts in whatever group you find, both good and bad. So you should be able to find others with the same interests as you have.

As eris said, the fastest and best way to learn identification is to be around people who are better at it than you are who are willing to show you.

Another good thing is that, by going on the forays, you get to learn some areas for hunting. Habitat is the key to successful mushroom hunting, and you'll get to see exactly what sorts of habitat produce various mushrooms.

I've been able to meet lots of great people over the years by associating with the Colorado Mycological Society, and go mushroom hunting with many of them. A great part of learning directly from the experts is that they'll often show you tricks for identifying that aren't in any of the books.

Mycological societies are a great hands on way for learning how to apply the information you glean from field guides in a less abstract way. The club I belong to consists of mostly older people who range from being interested primarily in edibles to members whose interest is of a more scholarly nature encompassing a broader spectrum of fungi genera and species. We have monthly forays followed by a meeting to discuss and exhibit finds a few day later. You are likely to come away with a more practical understanding of fungi if you choose to join one of these clubs.
Another bonus being the focus on mushrooms in your general region? this helps to narrow things down when you encounter a mushroom you are unfamiliar with.

Myco societies are a great way to become familiar with making distinctions with ID keying. They also are great ways to learn about habitats for fungi. My group loves great food, too.
