I'm on myspace. I use it like an extended version of email. Check it maybe two or three times a week.
Granted, there are a lot of douche bag types on there. At best, it's good for a laugh every once in a while. But just like in real life.. if there's someone I don't like, I wont talk to them, or look at them, or give them any attention, even hate.

Frankly, I don't understand people who have such a big problem with it. It's not hurting you. Sure, lots of stupid emo fuckers with low self-esteem use it to whack their ego. (however that works.. ) But those aren't the only people using it, and those are not the only reasons people use it for.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it. At all. It gives people a free and easy way for them to express themselves. If you have such a big problem with it, don't go there.

But as for me.. I've met some very cool people on there. And because of it, I've come into contact with long lost friends from high school and beyond that I lost contact with long ago and thought I would never see or talk to again. So I think it's cool.

The way I have my page set up, I don't usually get stupid band invites and random stupid people messaging me. Well some random people.. but usually cool ones. Because I'm cool.

But yeah a lot of people are pretty dumb and clueless. Don't hate myspace for that. It's the government's fault. And TV. And society. These are the same people you will see when you walk outside, or go to the store, or school, or work. Gives you an idea of how they think.

Frankly, people and situations in real life piss me off a lot more. Myspace just gives you a peek into their mind.

Some people with their self-righteous "i'm sooo much better than you coz i h8 Myspace" attitudes are no better than the millions of generic fucktards that make it embarrassing to have an account there in the first place. I cant stand the little maggot farmers, but i choose not to waste my time on them. Ive found some old friends and shitloads of cool music so as with anything, you gotta take the rough with the smooth.

On saying that though, every time i go there it makes me feel like deleting my account, ripping out my hard drive and nuking that shit in the microwave.

Like 40oz said, Myspace can be cool if used in the right way (not obsessively)... but i still feel as though i've caught something from it every time i log on for more than an hour.

While i see why people really have a strong distaste for myspace, it has been quite usefull for me....

Ive managed to find so many old friends whom without that stupid website i probably would never have been able track down :smile:

Myspace, good for networking, beyond that all the hallow superficial assmonkeys on there will give you migraines.

Id like to think that people dont actively hate Myspace.

I have absolutely no need for it. Keep up with the music scene? I am a pillar of the music scene. Find old friends? thats what high school reunions are for, and frankly, if they have become a Myspace whore, I would rather leave them be and we can both think that the other is cool and doing well.

I dont get it.... what can you do on Myspace, that you cant do on here? or any forum?
I have actually heard people say "Ive seen that guy on Myspace".... wtf?

While Im sure that not everyone on Myspace is scarf and converse clad emo hipster, those are the vocal and socially prominent majority of them, and thusly deems the overall stereotype.

I just use myspace to get free hosting for my songs. HAh that's about it.

I think it's silly to hate Myspace.

For every thing that a huge group of people latch onto to make popular, an equally huge group of peopl jump out and say they hate it.

Once it becomes cool to like something it becomes "edgy cool" to hate it, and hating on popular shit is no less of a trendhopping thing to do than loving a popular thing.

Here's a fact: Sixteen year olds are annoying. That's always been the case. It was different when you were sixteen though, back then sixteen year olds seemed pretty cool. You just didn't realize how much of a douchebag you were.

Since there's a lot of sixteen year olds on myspace, there's a lot of irritating bullshit on there.

But Myspace is a HUGE community. Anyone can join, and anyone can post on there. So yeah, there's a lot of dumb kids, but there's also a lot of cool people.

I also thought Myspace was lame until I signed up. But when I joined, something really cool happened. All kinds of people from around my town who I'd either just seen walking down the street, or kind of known casually became actual friends. I talk to them on MSN, and stop them in the street and converse. People who weren't friends became close to me, and that's really, really cool.

For that, I have to praise Myspace.

yeah, i wake up every morning hoping people think I am cool for hating on Myspace.
in fact, our community of counter-counter culture has made me tons of friends. All the mysanthropic people I pass on the street or knew slightly now have created a bond with me through our mutual distrust of trendy emo people....

Oh, come on. It's not like people who are doing things do be cool are 100% concious of what they're doing.

And Myspace certainly isn't composed entirely of trendy emo people. It's all kind of people, and like I said, because of it I've turned many aquaintances into actual friends. Only a small handful might be considered "emo", but in my experience, "emo" people are just people. They're of no greater or lesser value than others.

They are the dredges of society. The epitome of american culture. They are souless.

Since when did everyone need a website to meet people? seems to be an evolving personal deficiency in people if you ask me.
Have we become so desensitized as a nation that we are unable to strike up a conversation in person, or just stop a random stranger and get to know them without having to go through a personal webpage which is often a false representation of themselves?

Nobody "needs" a website to meet people, but without the website, I wouldn't have met the same number of people as I did, simple as that.

A lot of people seem to think that everything new, everything popular, and everything cool, is unecessary and evil, and anyone who benefits from, or enjoys these things is somehow inferior from others. This is nonsense, a kind of silly elitism where one believes that they can become superior to others by avoiding the things that others enjoy.

I mean, come on, they're the "dreges of society" simply because they visit a certain website and like a certain style of music?

Is it not shallow to judge someone's character so deeply based on such menial things?

Sometimes it's easier to just talk to someone else without the nervousness having to be in their presence.

I can meet people any way. I like meeting people through myspace and in RL.

When has it been normal to stop a random stranger and strike up a conversation? I don't think that's ever been a normal human practice. Perhaps in situations of intense boredom, like in an airport, but not everyday. Because of sites like Myspace, it's BECOME normal.

Another note:

This isn't just about Myspace, but about the internet as a whole.

There have always been really shy people. Teenagers in particular who grow up with a lot of difficulty making friends. They're the kids who feel hated and isolated most of their lives.

Because of the internet, IRC, Myspace, and MSN, these kids have had the chance to make friends. To have social networks, and to develop their self esteems.

Is there something wrong with that?

I hope it was obvious that I was being facetious when I talked about emo kids. I dont think I am being elitist, I just find it laughable how serious they take Myspace and life in general.

No, not at all, because when you don a certain "image", an idea of what you deem yourself to be, you are openning yourself up to interpretation. You are asking for stereotyping and judgement. Like a woman who wears a shirt that shows off her tits, she is asking people to look at her breasts and make a judgement on them.
