Contam??? 100% Colonized?

Do you have a 100% colonized cake when the whole things white all the way to the middle, or just when the outside is covered.

Seperate question. I did some birdseed cakes and Im starting to see a little yellow, is that just stain from the seed or contam? Wish I had pics. Its yellow and transparent, like honey. I didnt rinse the seeds so i was thinking its just runoff from the seeds.

a cake is completely colonized when it is white all the way through...but if you are going to grow off the cakes you can get away with a partially uncolonized middle. For casing, a completely colonized cake is essential.

I guess u can kinda tell if its colonized by looking at the bottom of the jar right?

Ok, thats what I thought. The yellow must be from the water and birdseed , making a yellowish brown runoff. Thanks.

The yellow isn't runoff, its mushroom metabolites being excreted (mushroom pee). It usually evaporates but can build up in enclosed spaces or at high incubation temperatures.

Mushroom pee? Well I do sometimes have it up to 88degrees at certain times of the day. I check on the twice a day to adjust the temps and check for contams. Is 88 to high? Will it stunt the colonization? I just try to keep it at 86 and lower it or turn it up acording to the thermometer
