The Official Poor Guy In College Food Thread

Ever since college rolled around, I've been putting most of my money into books, classes and gas. Finding something to eat that didnt eat my fucking paycheck up was a must.
That's why Im creating this thread. Im hoping to provide a collection of tasty recipes that arent taxing on the pockets AND are very versatile.
One word. Oatmeal. This stuff is a godsend. Healthy and super cheap. Im not talking about your instant oatmeal crap son. That stuff is packed with sugars and sodium.
Im talking about plain old oatmeal. You can get a 5 pound box at costco for 8 bucks. I just made a bowl and it was amazingly delectable.
Boil water on stove. Pour oats in and set to medium heat. Let it go for 5-6 min. while stirring every now and then. Toss a packet of sweetener a tablespoon of sugar if your a purist. Chop up an apple and put it in there with Cinnamon as well, bring to a boil again. You can just turn the heat off and let it stand for 5-10 minutes to allow to thicken.
Enjoy.

I just made this for the first time this morning. It's like your normal breakfast burrito/taco with a twist, and it's easy to make.
You'll need: - a corn tortilla - refried beans - 1 egg - chopped onion - cayenne pepper - garlic salt - cilantro - crema de mexicana or sour cream - olive oil (or butter/ghee/lard/whatever)
You take a taco/burrito's worth of refried pinto beans, and put it in a pan on high heat with a couple tablespoons of (good) olive oil. Add a handful of chopped onion and let simmer until beans are consistently hot. Crack an egg over the mixture and beat all the ingredients together with your spoon. Immediately add cilantro, garlic salt, and cayenne pepper. Cook until egg is done.
Meanwhile, get a tortilla and sprinkle a little water on it. Toss it in the microwave for 20 seconds.
Spoon your bean mixture into your tortilla, and top with crema de mexicana (or sour cream) and a little hot sauce if needed.

I'm poor and in college. It might just be because I'm in a hispanic neighborhood, but mexican food is pretty much what I live off of most of the time. And the meximarts here are hell-of cheap.
Most of those ingredients should already be in your kitchen. All the others are cheap.

Very little nutrional value lies within top ramen....but from a cost standpoint, it's a great deal.

I hear yea on the oatmeal! picked up a box of that at coscto last week. Black beans are the sheeeeit for lunch/dinner too. I make a huge pot and then seperate them into containers in the fridge. heres what their good for:
-in a bowl with salsa, cheese, sourcream, tortilla chips -BB Burrito -Put an egg on top for good frijoles con juevos in the morning -Refry with olive oil and garlic and peppers for healthy refried beans -good smells in the sheets

A pack of rice, rice a ronie or just yellow rice or one of the many pilif packs, and a can of veggies, cook the two together in one pot, prolly under 2 dollars & feeds two. Frozen burritos, very cheap. Pasta & sauce, often on sale, often one or the other or both are on sale for buy one get one free, i buy them even if i am already stocked up, makes a great cheap camping dinner at a fest, you come off like a hero & spend 4 bucks to feed the gang.

1 jar of 0 calorie alfredo sauce (about 3 bucks) 1 pack of wheat noodles (about 2-4 bucks) 1 garlic clove (about 80 cents)
Cook the noodles as instructed on the package. Roast the garlic (peeled of course) and combine it with the alfredo sauce which should be heated in a pan before pouring onto the noodles. Very healthy and lasts about 3-4 meals if you are the only one eating it.

I tried aaron's recipie and it was nothing short of delicious. By the end of the meal, there was only a handful of pasta. The shrimp mysteriously dissapeared
This might come in handy for anyone who lives near a souplantation. Just sign up for the vegrewards program, totally free, and make your birthdate the day you signed up.
In a couple days or so, you'll get an email with a buy one adult meal, get one free coupon. They say to bring your I.D., but they NEVER check.

Yeah, great idea! Members are always joining so another cheap food thread isn't all that bad..
Pasta of all sorts is cheap. I made fusilli with ricotta & pecorino yesterday...very good, sort of an alfredo sauce.
These wraps/burritos have come in handy so many times I cannot even count:
* 2 cups uncooked brown rice * 4 cups water * 4 (15 ounce) cans black beans * 2 (15.5 ounce) cans pinto beans * 1 (10 ounce) can whole kernel corn * 1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes and green chiles * 16 (10 inch) flour tortillas * 1 pound shredded pepperjack cheese
Courtesy of www.allrecipes.com
Just freeze those puppies (recipe makes about 30) and you'll have food fo eva! Running late for work and no cash? grab one or three of these for break.
Lasagna can be cheap since it makes so damn much. I made a pan of lasagna last fall and that shizzz lasted me like two weeks. Bought some dec. chianti to drink with the lasag and lived the semi-high life for a bit.
