origin of tasmanian cubensis...anyone know??
    #539079 - 02/03/02 06:07 AM (15 years, 10 months ago)

Can anyone shed more light on the exact origin of this strain?

eg where and when (what time of year) it was picked.

From Hawkeyes site I'm aware it is collected by BIO.

I have lived in tasmania and it is definately not sub tropical which is why it seems unusual for P.cubensis to be found there - I have never seen shrooms growing in summer in tassie, its always march april (autumn) when woodlovers like Psilocybe subaeruginosa and related species occur (eg Psilocybe tasmaniana Guzm?n & Watling).

PS. i have no doubts that the tassie cubensis is a great strain just interested in its orgin.

Hi, WEll Psilocybe cubensis is found in Tasmania.

Read my book "Magic Musrhooms of Australia and New Zealand" at http://www.erowid.org

HEre is a list of the known species from Tasmania.

Copelandia cyanescens,
Psilocybe australiana,
Psilocybe cubensis,
Psilocybe semilanceata,
Psilocybe subaeruginosa and Psilocybe tasmaniana.

have a shroomy day.

AS for HAwk. IF his labels says it is a Tasmania shroom then it is exactly what he advertises.

Who gave it to him might be a mystery. grow some and eat the results and maybe you will see where it originated fromm.

Most likely the cows belly who devoured the first spores.

As you have said the original print came from Bio - i think later prints were sent from Bio to Lizardking who pasted them on to Sporeworks.
One of THE best strains ive seen fruiting wise and the second most noticably potent - nearly up there with the Puertos and nicer too...
MJ how are those IDs going?? Cant wait to find out which type those psilocybes are..:-)
Ive been told that Cubensis has also been found out on the mornington Penisula near Dromana, but im not sure about that. And also that there is a park in Fairfield where Liberty Caps grow everywhere and i cant wait to have a look - these were the first shroom i ever tried (in New Zealand too).
Hey, Tazdevil - did you ever find Ps.Tasmania? Was it growing in dungie soil??
Also i would expect Ps.Cyanescens to be found in Tassie too - as it tends to love the same conditions as the Sub variants

MJshroomer,

I have already read your book, very comprehensive and an excellent read...in fact i used some of locations mentioned in tasmania to go shroom hunting most useful.

If possible can u tell me where you got the info that you put in your book about P.cubs in tassie.

Is it possible that the spores have arrived there from elsewhere, and adapted to the cooler climate? P cub is usually sub tropical isnt it?

I assume it would be found in cow manure in summer, like other P cubs?

Bluemeanie,

When i lived in tassie wasnt really expert at iding different species (just knew to avoid the gallerinas). Are use refering to P.cub (tas strain) or Psilocybe tasmaniana. (the Psilocybe subaeruginosa variant) ?

P cub dont think so, what where called golden tops in tassie are young P.sub's i think...no one generally hunted for shrooms in summer.

P.tasmaniana - how would i distinguish these from P.sub?

ps. thanks for the spores mate.

:-) thats the same as us in Melb - i remember when i was asking where to find psilocybes i always had to refer to Ps.Subaeruginosa (brown capped) and its lighter-coloured variants as 'gold-tops'
I have read from stamets that Psilocybe tasmanias - or what-ever-the-fuck-it-is-called :-) - grows exclusively in dung or dung-rich soils.
If your interested in hunting in melb this april/may let me know...:-)

Looking at MJ shroomers guide:

"15. Psilocybe tasmaniana Guzm?n & Watling
Documented Locations: ....Mt. Field National Park. Solitary or in small groups on dung, or at least on debris (wood and leaves), intermixed with dung (sometimes kangaroo). Fruits in April and May. This species was also collected from Mt. Field National Park (in grassy area under trees with P. semilanceata). "

This grassy area that is refered to is exactly where i might have picked heaps of possible P.tas and i do remember that they "exhibited a blue-green tone at the base of the stipe." (as per MJ shroomers guide) and the grass had heaps of roo and possum dung all over it.

5 grams of these babes rocked or so i hear
