how can these shrooms possibly survive in the wild? is there something in nature that causes them to grow faster? or maybe the environment is very forgiving and stable, like a cave.

Great pic. I find the head to be very light. Are you using a strong light?
They don't look like the ones in photos I know. Look at the ones from the book of Guzman
If you look at picture num. 749 you see that the stem has this specific structure. The mother mushroom from the ones I cultivated looked more like the ones in picture 753.
Are you sure they are zapotecorum? Where did you get them from?

Yeah, aztecorum isn't easy. I have also some on wood, but only since half a week in fruting conditions.
My first question was: which temperature? I mean they grow at 3000 m from agoust to september. When I was at that height or higher in Mexico, I never thought I would need some day to know what temperature there is, so I just don't remeber! Mexico city has about 20 C to 24 C (but sometimes also lower) at day in september (2200 m) and maybe 10 C at the morning. So it could be that the aztecorum like wether 15 - 18 C or 18 - 20 C.
18 -20 C is about the temperature in my growing room (it's still winter here...). If they need lower temps, I would have to use my climate room (small container which can be set to any const. temperature between 10 and room temp.)
I'll keep you informed, and hope you also do it...
