What's the deal with Perlite?

In my rubbermaid fruiting chamber, I just pour water with H2O2 added, in the bottom and elevate my substrate containers. Saw no difference when using perlite, except for the mess.

I can see it being necessary when birthing cakes to wick up water, otherwise it seems totally unnecessary.

Am I missing something?

Yes, perlite humidification isn't necessary for casings.

No, the perlite is for humidification, not wicking water to your cakes. Most people put their cakes on top of a lid in between the cake and the perlite. Direct contact with overly wet perlite COULD cause dieback, or contamination with cakes.

There are outdoor situations where perlite humidification has a usefulness for casings!!!!
