more harddrive hell
    #5355745 - 03/01/06 11:22 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

hey guys. My external hard drive that houses my own music/huge music library/tons of great programs.. is having some trouble. I was at my moms house using it, and it feel off the computer about 2 feet. I tested it and it seemed fine. I bring it back home and it will not open. My computer starts acting strangely slow..and fucks up when its connected. I have no access to the data inside.

I just wanted to know if there's any hope of a data recovery..and if this calls for spending money and letting someone else do it. I noted that the drive did seem to be making a little more sound then usual. its definitely fucked up. My computer dectects it.. but nothing loads/cant look at it.

I have a 110gb acomdata external. I really hope I can get this data back. Some of its priceless to me.. (many hours of my own work.)

I don't forsee a happy ending for you, I'm afraid. :frown: Your drive most likely dropped a head. Sometimes they can still be responsive (albeit slow) after that kind of damage, other times they're done for instantly. The only thing I can suggest is to try the drive on a variety of computers/operating systems. You said it seemed to work at you mother's, so try going back there.

And yeah, unless you have REALLY valuable files on there, data recovery won't be worth it.

The attached book has some good ideas, but unfortunately, mostly for internal drives. It might be useful to you, I figured it was worth a shot.

Bear in mind, however, that most of these methods are designed to get your hard drive working temporarily, so you can pull critical data, and in doing so will not fix it, and may even break it "more". I'd recommend following supercollider's advice and trying it on many system configs first.

I know how upsetting toasted drives can be, so I wish you the very best of luck :sun:
