Psychedelic Jar Project

For those of you who have seen my monitor, this jar is done in the same style. Too much time + Sharpies = Colored Monitor!
Here is the jar that I started out with. It's pretty plain to be keeping something as interesting as shrooms inside, so I've given it some personality. Before:

And here it is After:

Here are the supplies I used: Sharpies and two white nail polish bottles. The clear coat I never ended up using because it was very easy to smear the sharpie accidentaly. The jar can be handled all you want and it holds its color and everything fine, so it's no loss.

I first started by taking the jar apart.

Then bagging up all the parts besides the two glass pieces to be colored (the jar and lid). You don't want to be misplacing any parts .

When applying the two bottles of nail polish, I wanted to not touch the surface as much as possible, so I placed the lid on my measuring cup (which held it very well as it's rim lined up with the lids rim very nicely), and the jar was inverted over a taped down thing of Bac-Os. Mmmmm Bac-Os.

With both painted white and dried enough to paint, I started at it. The markers need frequent drawing on paper to get them to expell and re-soak the felt tip. It also helps (but also blunts the tips) to press down slightly on the tip while on the paper to soak the tip. Using the sides of the felt and not just the tip is also very helpful.
I COVERED entire pieces of paper with marker front and back. maybe 2 sheets worth in all. You'd be surprised how fast the tips dry while drawing on the nail polish.
The seal was not as tight as I had wanted it to be, so I increased the pull on the lid by shortening the lenght of the piece that pulls down on the lid. It was tricky to get both sides bent and get the piece back on, but it's possible. The jar is much tighter now that I've tweaked that piece, so the shrooms should be even more secure in the jar.
I only happened to do this part before it was finished was because it was on my mind constantly, at no point did I color with any parts attached as the picture would imply.
I was just about to upload one last picture of the jar in progress, but I just hit my upload limit. I have more angles and such if you guys are interested when I have more upload allowance.

Sharpies can work well for that sort of thing, but have you considered using enamel paints? They're sturdy, dry rigid, are colorfast, and would result in a better overall quality of coloration. They're also totally waterproof and can range from flat color to very shiny color.

Six? It seems like a lifetime, or at least a main era - -the kind of peak that never comes again. San Francisco in the middle sixties was a very special time and place to be a part of. Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run, but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant." Hunter S. Thompson.

That's dedication at work there... it's like a Blue Peter make gone crazy
If you're going to do it again, get some enamel paints like those things used for painting Airfix kits, the Humbrol paints that are about the same size as a bottle of nail polish. You'll get super thick and glossy looking colours. A few tins would easily do that jar, maybe even a couple. Double bonus, they also smell excellent if your into the smell of petrol and solvents...
The monitor is great as well!
