Local cacti greenhouse (pics)
    #5338700 - 02/25/06 06:14 PM (17 years, 11 months ago)

Hey folks I just thought some of you might like to see these. These were taken at the local college. I do reptile rescues in my area, so I am pretty familiar with the Bio staff. At the end of semester I get the chance to look for plants left by students. I now have a broad collection of columnar cacti.

That is a pretty awesome deal. you seem to be gathering quite a large columnar cactus collection.
any active or rare cacti in this batch, anything special? (types with cool flowers....anything special that stands out from the others)

Looks like some of those cacti are horribly neglected.

Thats probably why I get them for free.
I guess that happens when they depend on students for all the care. I am trying to get them to institute a volounteer program. They have them for the museum and animal displays, but not for the greenhouse.

I like the barrel cacti, but that is probably because I like those in particular anyways. What I hate about them is how hard they are to move and transplant, especially when they get any wider/taller than 10 inches or so. Heavy with big, strong spines. I just moved one out of a pot in my house today, because it was still small(like, 5 inches tall, at most). If anyone has any good tactics for moving larger barrel cacti, could you PM me?

Some of them are clearly stretching for sunlight, one is beginning to topple over, on IS toppled over and has turned yellow. A few of them have some nasty scars that don't look very normal, one of them has some sort of nasty total scarring around the base.

They look like they can keep on being strong, but some of them are pretty gnarly.

Probably MORE nurturing than a desert.

Haha, not killing the joke. Just don't outdo the desert by too much. She's a bitch when you show off.

Beautiful, they all need repotting or replanting in the ground, depending where you are.
