Illustrator Question

I just got Illustrator CS2, and I havent really done anything with it before. So I feel kind of lost. Anyone know of some decent tutorials? I'm mostly interested in bringing in picture's I've taken, and turning them into 2-3 colored layers, and making them more illustrated. Less photograph like. Any pointers?
Also I'd like to be able to make a decent ray effect. I'm going to keeping fooling around, hopefully I'll pick it up soon.

Nahh, I don't think you want Illustrator. If you are using Photos, you need Photoshop. Illustrator is for vector graphics, or mathematical based, line drawings and such.

well, usually to turn a picture into a 2 or 3 color layered vector you would use Adobe Streamline ... but that's automatic, so it's not really quite the same ...
in illustrator, it's all about using the pen tool and knowing how to groove with the lines ... if you could describe more closely with words and/or visuals what you're looking to do, i'll surely point you in the right direction ...
i don't know of tutorial sites, to be honest .. i just learned through years of screwing around ...

Make sure u use Photoshop for photo like image/effects and illustrator for vector look, technical design. Use'em both together for max results. Both are easy to use if u know the basics but to achieve nice results takes time, practice and knowledge. Google for tutorials, you'll find A TON mostly for photoshop.
Good luck. PM if u have any specific doubt.

You need this book . You'll get a good grasp of what Illustrator can do. Well worth the investment.

actually streamline has been discontinued, and a new, better version of streamline has been built into illustrator CS2, called live-trace. Not only does it have way more options than streamline ever did, but it looks better, AND retains color now as well.

amen! Also, look into the gradient-mesh tool, which is another art in itself, and also the blend tool. Those are the types of things you would have a hard time emulating in photoshop.

Plug-ins are probably the only way you'll be able to do it, and none of them will (unfortunately) achieve the effects you displayed in those pictures ... the closest you will get is with the streamline function in CS2 ..

If you like to draw, why don't you just draw it?? Its not exactly simple to make something that isn't a drawing look like a drawing without actually drawing it.
Illustrator sucks anyway. Its got lots of bells and whistles, but most of them are useless for anything but screen display or full color process printing. I much prefer using Freehand. It will be interesting to see how Adobe handles Freehand now that they've bought Macromedia...

I can't draw with a mouse. And I can't afford a tablet right now. But as soon as I get the tablet I'm pretty sure I'll, after awhile, be able to achive that look.
and the reason I dont just draw it freehand on paper is because I need it to be a vector graphic. And I don't have a scanner.
no worries, thanks for the help guys. i'll post some progress pics once I get rolling.
