graphic tablet questions

Anybody use a tablet for their graphic work? I've been looking to get one primarily for work with Maya and Photoshop. What are some pro's and con's that you've come across in working with one? Do you find yourself bouncing between mouse & pen, or have you adjusted to only using the pen? How has having a tablet benefited your artwork???
Any comments or opinions would be appreciated.

While I've never used one, most people I know who have and do often use the pen for everything, making their mouse obsolete. Tablets (from what I've heard) don't improve your art, so much as make your time drawing more efficient. Strokes are easier than swaying a mouse back and forth. I'm sure you know wacom is the only route to go.. If you're looking for one on the cheap check out the graphire 4x5.. and if you have cash to burn, check out the intuos series

Thanks, I'll check out what Wacom has to offer. Im looking for something around 9x12, not too big, not too small. I've used a tablet before, but that was 10 years ago and I had no idea what I was doing. Needless to say, I gave up using it....

wacom is definately the way to go. while in photoshop most wacom tablets have shortcuts on the pad itself to prevent from constant switching from mouse and back. contrary to jared's statement, most people i know use the pad for projects only and the mouse is used for everything else. even the most basic wacoms have a single pad button for switching so it's not really a big deal. if you don't have the usb space you can use the mouse that they provide with the pad, but i don't like it as much as standard mice. i find my drawing is slightly different when i draw with the pad, but i haven't used it enough to make any good comparisons.

I use a Wacom tablet exclusively and only find it essential for photoshop or where pressure sensitivity is a must. Illustrator...3d programs...office apps...music editing, I still use the pen, but it's being used with it's mouse feature, and because I don't have much desk space. If you go with Wacom, they have a small Graphire which comes with a mouse along with the pen/tablet.

9x12 is HUGE, man. You're looking at 600$+ for that size :P
Check out Wacom's lcd which is a tablet, as well. You draw directly on the screen. I can't imagine anything better

Whoa coooool! Too bad I don't have that much money . However, Ive got the funds and the space for a 9x12 so I figure why not?
Thanks for the advice guys, I had no idea Wacom tabs had shortcuts in PS, that's definitely a plus. Right now I'm really looking at the Intuos, seems like the best one thus far.

i've got a 6x8 intuos2 and couldn't be happier. perfect size for dropping in your lap and drawing on freely.
i can confidently say that, if you're at all serious about its usage, wacom is the way to go.
