On grow lights
    #5299726 -

Ok, i've read that HPS is better for flowering than a MH, what i'd like to know is a halide a really poor choice for growing a plant in both the vegetative and flowering stage?  I'm on a budget and saw this on the o'kief website:  http://okief.com/growgear.html

The reflector, ballast, and a (used) bulb for 75 bucks.  I've used only small lights in the past (fluorescents, 150w hps, etc...), and as a result i've grown short indica plants that were pretty small.  I would like to grow some BIG buds, faster, so I thought a 400w would give me what I want.  Can I get big buds on tall sativas with a metal halide lamp, or is the blue spectrum going to give weak growth when it comes to flowering?

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks guys

 :bigblunt:

A metal halide lamp is definitely not sufficient for flowering a plant. But its great for vegging!
Go with a hps when flowering, but make sure you 400w matches the space you provide. I forget the ratios (its been too long) but I think its 80w/sq foot.
So 400w would suit 5sq ft. Any more than that and you'll need co2 to really take advantage of the wattage.

Just get a 400w HPS and call it good. HPS work fine for vegging, way better than fluoros! And they are the best for flowering. I woudln't waste your money on a Halide when a HPS can take care of both vegging and flowering cycles all in one!

You'de save a bunch of money that would be better invested in other ways.

Thanks for the info.  Here's the cheapest HPS setups (with the ballast, bulb and reflector) I could find online:  http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/customkititems.asp?kc=HLHPS04MAX&eq=
http://www.bghydro.com/BGH/customkititems.asp?kc=HLHPS04SE&eq=

They're not air-cooled like more expensive reflectors, do you think heat would be an issue with these lights?  I'd rather not spend more than 200 bucks.

Well everyone that says it's "not sufficient" for flowering and that you won't get great buds is either lying or just hasn't used it and is going off someone else's word.

MH is damn good for flowering, HPS is just that much better. When i used to grow, i used a 400 W MH with a couple CFL's here and there for spot coverage, but the majority was from the 400. Just make sure you're bulb is no more than a year old and that you have adaqute ventalation for the plants, plus a good flowering fertalizer and you'll get yourself some awesome awesome buds. :bigweed:

And on the subject of flouros... if you know which kind of flourecent to get, and have some knowledge about growing, you can bigger buds than with a 400 MH, even when the flouro light is at 6500 K.

The thing about flouro's is heat... there is none. With the 150 w Flourecent lamps i've seen, as long as the plants aren't touching they're fine. And i mean up to a centimeter away they're perfect.

actually there are studies that have proven that Mh has more uv light which in turn leads to more potent buds..in fact the best spectrum for flowering would be a mix of mh and hps..but to anwswer your question Mh will work fine for both stages of growth ,and your plant will grow great in veg as someone stated..i myself run 2 400 watt mh's,and 2 400 watt hps's...

and you can buy a conversion bulb which is a hps spectrum, and then you just switch out your bulbs

There you go, from the star trek man himself

They have these dual ballasts and discount hydro.com, either a 400 or 600 HPS with a 400 MH, all connected to one reflector and one ballast, but you're able to control them seperately. Pretty damn gnarly for those of you lucky enough to have that much room. I can hardly imagine the buds that would come from that light.

Sweet!

Hrethic, fluoros are nice!  I've done small SOG grows with just fluoros (plants finished at ~1ft tall, forced 'em to flower once the clones rooted and it worked well).

Good to know MH will do fine alone, and that is a cheap setup (http://okief.com/growgear.html), and I can get new 400w bulbs for free.

So do you think there is any way I could buy one of these, and convert it into a HPS, or would I have to get a different ballast for a HPS?  At $75 for the ballast reflector and bulb ready to use I could buy two and have an 800w dual spectrum setup (provided I wouldn't have to buy another ballast, regardless 75 bucks is a good deal, imo )

Have a nice day guys!  :coffee:

By the way, kirk, those are some beautiful buds

I have heard from many sources if you are going for an "all in one" light, metal hallide is the way to go. I've never had a HPS, but I can't compain about a 400w metal halide.

My friend got his complete HPS 400w set up with reflector, bulb, and ballast, for only 320$ or so...

If your going to decide between a 400w MH and 400w HPS, the HPS would be a much better choice IMO

Definitely, but that's more than I can spend at the moment.  75 bucks for the whole halide setup is pretty appealing to me!  Of course I could put a little work into it and convert a security light even cheaper, but I like the idea of just plugging her in. :cool2:

peace man  :mushroom2:
